Gorgeous Technicolor musical numbers; no plot.

The introduction to this film states that the Ziegfeld Follies had no plot; it was a stage show with un-connected musical numbers and beautiful girls. That's exactly what you get here. It's a variety show with no storyline. The opening number is one of the most incredible I've ever seen, featuring a carousel with live white horses, dozens of dancing ladies in Technicolor pink, and Lucille Ball cracking a whip at women dressed like black leopards. Really! The film is worth seeing for this scene alone...but it goes downhill from there. The problem is that many of the acts are severely outdated. Today's viewers may have trouble relating to a skit about a man trying to get a pay-phone operator to connect him. There are no African-American performers except in Lena Horne's number, which does not include any white people, a sad reminder of segregation in 1946. A dance number supposedly set in Chinatown includes some Asians, but also Fred Astaire in unconvincing Chinese make-up. If you don't care about story or characters but would like to experience the Ziegfield Follies as they really were back in the day, this might appeal to you.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Peak MGM musical

Lush Technicolor extravaganza and a must for fans 1940's era MGM musical comedy. The dream dance sequences between Fred Astaire and Lucille Bremer are stunning. Comedy skits by Fanny Brice and Red Skeleton also fill out this take of a 40's version of a Ziegfeld produced Follies.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

One of the Great MGM Musicals

Any musical featuring Astaire, Garland and Kelly in their prime, and directed in color by Vincente Minelli is bound to be a hit. And this one certainly was.
With Garland emerging into womanhood, we see a glimpse of her vocal magnetism and comic genius in a musical number spoofing movie stars. Astaire has several big numbers, including the incredible oriental ballet with Lucille Bremer. We see Astaire for the first and only time in oriental makeup and garb; the dancers costumed in red against a blue-purple set is typical Minnelli--magnificent contrast and artwork. And the Kelly-Astaire duet is their only serious dancing together in their careers (discounting That's Entertainment which occurred well past their active years). The video quality is like being at the movies--especially if you watch it on your HD-enhanced blu-ray player.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Classic movie

This is a Beautiful Classic Movie. I now have all three of the Ziegfeld movies. Which I enjoy watching. I love the old movies. Just wish the 2 other ones were in color also. Even though the customs are so Beautiful in black and white.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

N/A - an old classic

I bought it because I simply wanted a DVD replacement of my old VHS version of this wonderful tribute to the man, Ziegfeld. In particular, I love the two segments, "The Lottery Ticket" (Fanny Brice), and "Guzzler's Gin" (Red Skelton). Both are good for a few honest-to-goodness belly laughs!Vollständige Rezension lesen...
