Tactics & determination can turn defeat into victory.

Beginning on November 14, 1965, Lt. Col. Moore led the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in the week-long Battle of Ia Drang. Encircled by enemy soldiers with no clear landing zone that would allow them to leave, Moore managed to persevere despite being significantly outnumbered by North Vietnamese Army (NVA) forces that went on to defeat the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry only two-and-a-half miles away the next day. film shows the battle of Ia Drang without any pomp or grandure. It's shown in a way that conveys the savagery, fear, courage & heroism in the face of impending defeat.
Sometimes it's sound tactical decision making & sheer force of will that decides the outcome of a battle, not numbers. A well researched & documented film showing the early days of the American War in Vietnam.
Excellent film & highly recommend.

Epic Film, Epic Cast

An epic film with an all star cast which tells of the other side of warfare.....the ones left at home. But, that's a simplistic statement, as it goes much farther. Yes, tis a war movie, and there's more than enough action for any testosterone addicts. Mel GIbson and Madelyn Stowe are boxoffice draws, But, I would suggest watching it more than once, as then the Other actors' characters will capture yer attentions and hearts. One of my fave roles for Berry Pepper, and Greg Kinnear NAILED his part, too, with quiet but solid perfection!! If'n yer one of the cult who swooned over "The Thin Red Line," you'll likely appreciate this one, too!Vollständige Rezension lesen

Best, most accurate war movie I have ever seen. I started watching movies when in elementary school. I started 1st grade in 1948.

Probably one of the most accurate war movies ever made. Lt. Col. Hall Moore led the new 7th calvary(helicopters were the new horses) into a 3 day and night battle against some of NVA regular solders many of which had been fighting for decades.
General Hal Moore was the active consultant on the film and insisted that it be as close to what he and his men dealt with. The movie shows us one of the few times a call for "Broken Arrow". This meant that the NVA was so close to the US troops that they needed the closest(to them) air support possible. Broken Arrow was a call for every available airplane and helicopter to bomb everything immediately in front of the US troops. Very dangerous but exceedingly effective. This call helped Moore and his troops to gain the upper hand against overwhelming odds and eventually win the battle. Then, as usual in Vietnam the Americans left the fire zone.

Everyone should know.

This was actually a copy for a young relative, a Generation-X-er. This is an historically accurate account of the real battle, and brings alive the reality and ugliness of war; but somebody has to be 'the soldiers' sooner or later...or the nation dies. Utopia is a fantasy, and running off to Canada just isn't practical. And I wanted her (and her kids) to know what we dealt with 40-50 years ago. Two thumbs up on this flick!Vollständige Rezension lesen

first rate depiction of war

One of the best war movies ever, based on a true story with an admirable commander and extremely brave soldiers; good balance of battlefield and home front scenes; excellent picture of the war in Vietnam that very few Americans understand now or understood at the time; the movie is first-rateVollständige Rezension lesen

a redux !

Honestly, I had seen this movie when it was released, a looonnnnngggggggg time ago. At that time I thought it was a good if unusual story of the beginning of the US involvement in Vietnam and the precursor, if you will, of a struggle with no end and too many casualties on both sides. How the US ever found itself bogged down there with no end was amazing and the bravery of both the US and Vietnam combatants was amazing. And this movie showed the emotions and heartbreak from both points of view, a first for me. The week I ordered this movie I had gone to an optical shop in Charlotte, N.C. and was helped by a lovely young woman, only 26 years old(meaning she was born in or around 1987) and she was from Vietnam.(the Northern part) She said her family had survived the bombings by hiding out in Cambodia. As I spoke to her I thought about WE WERE SOLDIERS, and how it shaped my thoughts about the seemingly endless war and waste of treasury and lives on both sides. I encouraged her to see it and I decided I too wanted to see it, again, so that I too would have a better understanding of this tragedy for all.Vollständige Rezension lesen

We Were Soldiers

This movie is based in the history of the Vietnam War and based on actual events.

The stellar cast of Mel Gibson, Sam Elliott, Greg Kinnear and Madeleine Stowe gives the hardships of one of the first major battles and the what the death toll imposes on the women who are married to these men back home... delivering the messages that their loved one has fallen.

This Movie is about Courage, Valor and the noble characteristics of the military member and the families left at home depicting what both indur.

For me personally, I have had family in battle and have been the Ombudsman for the Wives at home as well as watched as my sons both have been in combat situations. I found this movie very accurately depicted at least for the family at home during those times. Mel Gibson directs this movie and is great delivery. I would recommend this movie to anyone.

Very good movie.

This was a GREAT dvd. I've never seen a Mel Gibson movie that I didn't like and the movie did an excellent job portraying the actual event as it happened.
