First Generation Die-Cast Factory, Blue/Pink Box. Great Kit
I've had many different copies of the Metal Molder Die-Cast Factory through the years. This first generation kit with the lighter blue base and clear lid is quite well done and the molds are great. Toymax put a lot of thought into safety with this one as turning the unit on automatically locks the lid. Also, a secondary lock is engaged using a bi-metal lever which moves a lock bar into place as the unit heats up. This second lock will not allow you to open the lid until the unit cools down, though the gen. one molder allows one to open the lid while the unit is still warm and the lock was improved in the second generation unit (dark blue base with green lid/cover).
The four molds in this 1996 kit are the Motorcycle (very easy to mold), Dragon (very easy to mold), Winged Skull (harder to mold), and Wizard (hardest to mold). In order to get the skull and wizard to mold correctly (fill the mold completely) I let the metal heat for a very long time on the order of 15 minutes while shaking the machine just a bit to mix the metal every few minutes. I also don't just dump the metal into the mold and let gravity do the work, I tend to first dump the metal then and turn the dump knob back and forth a few times hoping to knock the molten metal into the mold using a bit of centripetal force in addition to gravity.
The kit includes 10 vials of metal and you should be able to get perhaps 11 or even 12 molded items by using the leftover metal that stays in the sprue after molding. It takes a bit of practice to get the molding right. This molder will work with any of the molds from any Metal Molder or Precious Metals casting set and is quite enjoyable both for children and for me, a 50 something adult.
