Interesting but not outstanding mixed bag...

It's always interesting to hear a song you know pulled around to fit a new interpretation- sometimes this can benefit the song and give it a whole new depth (Gary Jules' "Mad World" anyone?); but sometimes the exercise simply does not work, sounding like an old familiar song which has just been pulled around and then dumped.

The best thing and also the worst thing about this Double CD is exactly this conundrum.
It's an interesting concept- take 1 song from every year of Radio 1's 40 year existence, and get a contemporary artist to cover it whichever way they want to. Inevitably this works better with the earlier songs than the more recent ones; among the 40 tracks you'll find many which don't work at all, but you'll also be rewarded by the several that stand out as really fresh takes on tracks which are otherwise a bit dusty.

High points include James Morrison's sublime covering Paul Young's Come Back and Stay; Amy Winehouse's version of Johnny Nash's Cupid (which is in itself a cover of Sam Cooke's original!); and Mika & Armand van Helden's take on The Police's Can't Stand Losing You, which sounds like an entirely new and yet familiar song!
Lowest point is definitely The (normally excellent) Streets diabolical cover of Elton John's Your Song, which has all the energy and passion of scummy bath water dribbling out of an old, leaky and very unloved bathtub.

Overall this CD is well worth listening to as 'reference material' for anyone interested in making music; although I wouldn't recommend it to straight ahead music fans.
Oh, plus Robbie's on there as well. Whoop de doo.

Radio 1 - Established 1967 (Double CD)

This is a double album of 40 tracks of some good (some not-so-good!) cover versions of pop music from the 60s to 00's - one track for each of the last 40 years. It's an interesting mix. My own favourites: Robbie Williams doing a version of 'Lola' by the Kinks; K. T. Tunstall doing a version of 'Let's Stick Together' by Brian Ferry; Keane doing a version of 'Under Pressure' by Queen & David Bowie; Natasha Bedingfield doing 'Ray of Light' (Madonna) and Calvin Harris doing 'Stillness in Time' (Jamiroquai). My least favourites were The Streets version of 'Your Song' by Elton John (they murder it); and Stereophonics doing 'You Sexy Thing' (Hot Chocolate) - feeble. Many other tracks are passable covers, without adding or subtracing anything from the originals. Worth a listen.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Much, Much Better!!

This is certainly one of the best CD's Radio one has dished out in their collection. The first live lounge CD was very good, yet the second (Live Lounge 2) did not live up to much- they certainly have redeemed themselves in my eyes with this collection. It not only features songs from the 60's, 70's and 80's but it carrys on and includes tracks from the 90's and 00's it boasts a variety of artists my favorite track/s have to be Tracy Chapman Fast Car covered by Mutya and The Twang Drinking in LA- fantastic tracks, a very good cover is included by Girls Aloud covering Wheetus Teenage Dirtbag! Superb! If you appreciate new music and old music then you will certainly appreciate this album- its packed with something for everyone!Vollständige Rezension lesen...

RADIO 1 EST 1967 VARIOUS ARTISTS

Radio 1 Est 1967 - Various artists. I don't normally buy these sort of CD's (cover versions), but this one is BRILLIANT. Theres only one song I'm not keen on and thats Mikas version of a song by the Police, but I don't like the guy anyway!! FANTASTIC CD to listen to while driving........or just doing housework. I normally buy Metal CDs or sometimes indie music, but this one is my new favourite. DEFINATELY BUY IT!!!!Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Pure Dead Brilliant!

This albumn has encapsulated the whole meaning of music.
40 Years of various artsists covered by modern bands.

After hearing most of these tracks on Radio 1 in the UK, I waited patiently for the album.

It also reminded me of the great artists I had forgotten about, so I went out and bought many of the albums with the original songs on them.

To sum this album up, is to quote a famous Glaswiegian

PURE, DEAD, BRILLIANT

I think this covers all the bases.

Enjoy

Radio 1 Established 1967 (CD 2007)

A great idea done really well. Take a hit song from every year since radio 1 started & get some of the best artists from the past 10 years to cover them.
There are a couple of really bad ones but most of them are superb.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

40 Years of Pure Magic

There are some great tunes on this double CD, there are also some tunes put on here that make you wonder if they were only put on because they were the only artists who agreed to record something. Every album has a couple of so so tunes, but the majority on this album are pretty good.
I prefer CD 1 simply because it's nice to hear todays artists playing yesterdays songs and not trying to make a classic better. they make them sound just as good in their own style, and thats what makes this album so good, "THEIR OWN STYLE"
