Adventurous conclusion to Mags' familial roots

Mercedes Lackey is a wonderful Fantasy author. She was writing about fantastical beasts and mage powers years before JK Rowling had picked up a pen. Her various series are not dependent, necessarily, on anything that came before, but are based in her world of "Valdemar." "Bastion" is the fifth book in the Collegium Chronicles and the fifth to feature her character "Mags," an orphan boy that starts in slavery but ends up being freed and in service of the Crown and Kingdom of Valdemar as a Herald and kingdom spy.
