An Excellent Book For Teachers and Parents!
As a teacher, we are always looking for ways to reach our students that are not the same old thing. We have curriculum, but we need something that's just "different" -- and, I'm happy to say, Gail Gibbons did just that when she gave us "The Seasons of Arnold's Apple Tree." I stumbled across this book on the internet, when I was searching out some activities for teaching yet another unit on Apples. We took this very cleverly designed book, read it, and were enchanted.
The pictures are simple, but bright enough to capture the children's imagination. The story was just interesting enough to make the children wonder just what that Arnold was up to, and what was he going to do next? And Gibbons was crafty enough to work in a lot of science, art and social studies along with literature in this very sweet story about a boy who loves his tree enough to spend time with it through all the seasons of the year. It is a perfect book for teaching thematic units -- the children didn't even realize they were doing all the science, math, daily living and reading all rolled into one!
I used all the things that Arnold did with my class. We made wreaths, we picked apples, and made pies and cider. In the winter, we will decorate the tree with popcorn for the birds, and in the spring, we will watch the blossoms bloom.
We will love our tree for an entire year, and the children have been more than educated with the ideas of apples and yarn and glue -- they have been given ideas of love and continuity, and that's something that is rarely found in everyday literature.

As usual, Gail Gibbons does a delightful job of introducing a nonfiction topic in a developmentally appropriate way. This is a wonderful book for young children. I have several books by her I use in my classroom.Vollständige Rezension lesen...
