Much better than its reputation

The Mighty B! is one of Nickelodeon’s most recent cartoon shows, and while it piqued my interest, it’d been difficult getting good copies of the episodes online. The episodes posted on YouTube are few and of terrible technical quality. And judging from the online reviews, I’d be better off not seeing any. A lot of people really seem to hate this show. It’s got a disappointing 5.8 grade on tv.com, and it’s about the same on imdb.com.

However, I would not be discouraged. The Mighty B! is about a nerdy, hyperactive girl scout, so I figured it had to be interesting somehow. I wanted to see it for myself.

And I wasn’t disappointed. The show’s main selling point is the charm of Bessie Higgenbottom, and her voice actor/co-creator, comedienne Amy Poehler. Poehler gives Bessie a high-pitched, lisping voice that makes almost everything she says sound funny. The plot is that Bessie is a member of the Honeybees, a girl scout troop in downtown San Francisco, and she is on the quest of collecting as many scout badges as possible. For some reason, she thinks collecting all 4000-and something badges will turn her into “The Mighty B”, a buff, powerful super-heroine. Hence the name of the series.

Fun-lovingly, but dutifully, Bessie takes on every potential badge-collecting task with unbridled enthusiasm. She is being helped on the way by her younger brother Ben, her dog Happy and her fellow Honeybee scout, the buffoonish Penny. The role of the villains/rivals are handled by the archetypically snobbish Honeybee scout Portia Gibbons and her Trusted Lieutenant, Gwen Wu. Portia is not a terribly interesting main villain, but it’s a very nice detail that all the girls are in the same scout troop, because it makes their relationship more ambivalent. Bessie thinks it’s her duty to be polite and friendly to all her fellow Honeybee scouts, even a jerk like Portia.

The animation seems to be made in a 1990’s retro style, with highly exaggerated anatomy and manic expressions that adds to the show’s already twisted sense of humor. And there’s some nice visual touches like painted backgrounds and above all, close-up stills with lots of grotesque details.

Having established that I don’t think The Mighty B! is crap, and that I think it’s actually rather good, I feel the need to pose the question: Why do people hate this show so much?

One likely explanation is that hyperactive characters aren’t for everyone. Now, personally I love Goo (from Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends), but I can tell from various fan forums that she is a bit controversial. Overenthusiastic, hyperactive girls get on a lot of people’s nerves. And what we have here is a show focusing entirely on an overenthusiastic, hyperactive girl. Another explanation is that the show seems to be lacking a sense of wonder. There’s no shortage of weird, exaggerated and even surreal situations, but you always get the feeling that it’s no big deal, and the endings are often surprisingly anticlimactic. It’s still funny, but because of the show’s mood, it’s usually more chuckling-lightly funny than laughing-out-loud funny.

Despite the bad reviews, the show is apparently getting a second season this year. Here’s to another season, and to more DVDs coming out. I’m not paying an extra monthly fee to to get Nickelodeon (and unfortunately, I would have to), just so I can watch this, but I’d definitely buy more DVDs!

This B gets an A!

This childrens show is filled with many hidden high order jokes.
I find the series to be incredibly funny. The poor girl in this show is truly the epitome of teenage akwardness and it shows!
r>I like the show for its odd humor and strange litle girl.Vollständige Rezension lesen...
