The Jazz Singer (DVD, 2010)

As Jerry Golding (Danny Thomas) scales the heights of show business, he breaks the heart of his father, who had hoped that Jerry would follow in his footsteps, and the footsteps of his father, and become a Cantor. Sorrowfully, when Jerry finally makes it clear to him that he will be pursuing his career in show business instead of as a Cantor, Cantor David Golding reads the Kaddish service, indicating that, so far as he is concerned, his son is dead. A dramatic wedge is driven squarely between Jerry and his father who considers this to be not only a sin, but a major disappointment to his heritage.

In the years that follow, despite tremendous success, Jerry remains haunted by his decision. He makes one last attempt to reach out to his father and try to make him see that life has two sides, and that he has to live his own life as he sees fit to do so. A tearful reconciliation occurs when Jerry hears that his father is ill and will not be able to sing at the upcoming Yom Kippur service. He dutifully returns to sing the "Kol Nidre" in his ailing father's absence.

This is an excellent film and the parts were played most convincingly.
