Triumph - the best album ever by The Jacksons!

Question: What is the best album The Jacksons has ever done?
Answer: 'Triumph' from 1980!

This album was done right in between of 'Off the Wall' ('79) and 'Thriller' ('82) and it's definitely not far from their greatness. This is dynamite stuff from the Jackson brothers! Even though only one year had passed since the 'Off the Wall' album was realesed, you can hear and feel the rapid development of especially Michael on this album.

This was the follow-up to 'Destiny' ('78). But while that great album still had the disco, big afro, happy-go dancing vibe, this album has more muscle, a harder backbone, and is more tight and ass-kicking! Michael's voice is tougher and more hungrier than ever before, and he really sings like a man possessed on 'Can You Feel It?'. This really is top-notch vocals from Michael throughout the whole album. He sings falsetto on 'Your Ways' just as effortlessly as he sings gruntly and aggressively on 'Can You Feel It?' and gently on 'Time Waits for No One'. The production and the arrangment is snatchy and super throughout. What's so great about 'Triumph' is that you can HEAR all the instuments the whole time and it all sounds beautiful from the guitar-riff on 'Can You Feel It?', the strings on 'Eveybody', to the funky bass on 'Walk Right Now', and the horn-riffs on 'Lovely One'. The sound is not that far from Quincy Jones caliber.

It's funny but except for Janet, the late 70's and early 80's was the best time musically and artistically for ALL the Jackson siblings, that includes Michael, Jermaine, The Jacksons and even LaToya. That era with its style and sound was just made for Michael and the Jackson family.

My personal favourite song on the album is 'This Place Hotel' (a.k.a. 'Heartbreak Hotel'). It has such a haunting and strong melody and is always a high point on MJ's concerts. 'Lovely One' is if I'm not mistaken, the first time Michael sings out his 'hicks' (uh!), great song. The real masterpiece on this album however, and perhaps the most underrated song ever from The Jacksons, is called 'Everybody'. This song is not just one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard from The Jacksons, it's one of the loveliest and most beautiful songs I have ever heard period! The wonderful melody with it's strings, hornparts and Michael's flawless voice on top of it sounds like pure heaven to me! It's a shame it has never been performed live or been truly recogniced for it's true worth. It should have been a classic. It's just a beautiful moment...

A lot of MJ fans has for the most part expressed positive opinions on the various demos, alternative versions, and songs that didn't make the final song selection on different albums. I for one have always thought that Michael/The Jacksons and/or Quincy has been bang on target in picking and choosing the right tempos, sounds and songs EXCEPT here: SUNSET DRIVER!! What a killer song! Try to sit still while you're hearing it, it's hard. And it didn't make the album, that was a shame. It should have been picked instead of 'Wondering Who', I think.

My favourite songs from 'Triumph' in order are:
1. This Place Hotel (a.k.a. Heartbreak Hotel) 2. Everybody 3. Can You Feel It? 4. Lovely One 5. Your Ways 6. Walk Right Now 7. Give It Up 8. Time Waits for No One 9. Wondering Who

So all in all, no record collection should be without this album, the 'Off the Wall' and the 'Thriller' album.
