Not sure about anyone else, but a fascinating read for me!

I thought it was going to be nearly impossible to find this book, but an internet search showed it was still readily available. That's good because it's culturally important. W H Davies is one of my ancestors on my mother's side of the family. Great, great, great uncle or something like that. I remember telling that to a teacher at my infant school and she disbelieved me, calling me a liar. However it's true. I started reading this book when I was 19, but I was too young to understand it's significance. I gave up after a few pages because W H Davies was a tramp and a beggar in the USA and at that age I had no respect whatsoever for anybody who chose to live that way. The fact is.. now I'm 60 and I still don't, and distasteful as it still is to me, that aspect of the book is still there. What set Davies apart from other common or garden beggars or tramps however and what is so fascinating is his amazing way with words, which in the end came through and made him a famous celebrity. His most famous poem was 'Leisure' which a few years ago was taken up by Center Parcs for one of their TV adverts.

Anyway, that is the reason I bought and read the book. Interesting though it is, I feel he may have come to fame much sooner, and therefore been more productive and prolific in his literary achievements if he'd just worked and held down a normal job and saved some money to get himself started. He chose to do it the hard way, yet still found recognition in the end.

For anybody wanting to read about the exploits of a man who chose to live as a beggar and a tramp (hobo in the states) it's quite an interesting read, but obviously didn't become a blockbuster. His use of words and sentences is quite fascinating and very descriptive in parts, so for anyone interested in how the English word is used it's probably worth it from that point of view. I don't suppose I would have searched it out and read it were it not for the family connection. There you are Ebay, that's probably one of the more unusual reviews!

Interesting and compelling.

Read this first 63 years ago and still remember it and wanted to have my own copy it was good to read it again. I had to read it for an end of school exam and enjoyed it then.

G.B.haw chiose the title. Who can argue?

A brilliant author. This story is told in a poignant, self effacing manner. His observations of nature and his companions are first class.
The poems he wrote when he did find his niche are some of the best ever written by an english man.Vollständige Rezension lesen...
