SONY ERICSSON W810I

This is a great phone. Very easy to use. One of my favourite phones ever. Would never go for a touch screen phone. Want a phone that's easy to manage, choose this one.

Excellent phone for low price

An excellent phone with plenty of storage space for photos. The camera is above average for a mobile phone, as are the supplied headphones. While there is no need for W800i users to upgrade to this model, the W810i offers an impressive feature set for those considering the purchase.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

What Can I Say? It's Perfect!

I bought this phone in February 2007...i'd saved up for a while, and got it for £120 (which was cheap at the time) from 02's online shop...

As a sidepoint - I would never buy directly from 02 again, customer service was just terrible - i was meant to get an extra £20 discount which i never got, and the phone was meant to come with free speakers which also never came - repeated complaints to 02 have never been answered, aside from "we're dealing with it - it's now 7 months later!

Anyway back to the phone,...i bought it in Feb 2007, and it was absolutely brilliant, unfortunately I went swimming around June with it in the pocket of my shorts! I've never felt so bad, because that phone was my pride and joy, and it was beyond repair!

So i waited till i saved up for another phone...It's September 2007 now, and i bid for a used W810i on ebay yesterday which looked ok aside from having scratches on it's screen, set my maximum bid in at £75, someone else got it for £77 & £7 p&p...i was damn annoyed! - So i went down my local tescos and found a brand new one for £79.99 when i took it to the checkout they said i was entitled to £20 free phone credit! So I'm chuffed!!

Morale of that story is shop around - there are bargains to be had on ebay, but it's not always the best.

Right now really to the phone -

I've had 2 models of Sony Ericssons now, the K350i and the W810i - having previously had a Sagem (terrible!) Panasonic (was ok, for a year) Nokia (ok, but nothing amasing and died after 1 and a half years) and Motorolas (not so great)...i turned to the first of my Sony Ericssons, and found it brilliant, i kept it for over 2 years and it was fantastic in its day....i would now never dream of buying anything other than Sony..,...so I went for the W810i.

My friends were getting the W850 at the time, but i couldn't afford it and the W810i has pretty much the same features so i wasn't so jealous.

The phone was a dream. The screen is fantastic quality and resolution the colours are so bright and crisp, pictures are displayed brilliantly, the walkman is fantastic, easy to use and understand...great sound off it, with Sony's Megabass feature on the phone...The radio function is crystal. I've never had a problem with the calls.

I really don't understand some people complaining about the battery. I thought it was one of the most brilliant things of the phone - The battery is amasing! It lasts for ages, and charges breathtakingly fast - takes hardly any time - it absolutely eclipses any other phone's battery around.

The only minuses i could find? Well the fact that you can't use your own headphones - you have to have the Sony Ericsson special plughead to fit into the phone, and it is known to break off, and did on my last phone - so be careful with them! Personally i listen to my phone on the loudspeaker anyway, if i want to listen to music with headphones i use my actual 20Gig MP3 player.

It comes with half a gig of Memory, which you can upgrade to 4Gig, and even 8Gig...the half a gig is very nice tho...there is a way if you can find out how ;) to get videos from the net on to the phone, which is brilliant! I keep loads of family guy and music videos on mine!

The old sony ericssons used to have a problem with the joypad packing in totally - glad to say Sony have resolved this with the Walkman series and here in the W810i and its no longer a problem.

All in all its truely a legend among phones - an amasing phone!

This phone is great. Best phone I have ever had

It has an excellent 2 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom, a flash and autofocus. The camera is easy to use and has easy access controls for the zoom, autofocus and the shutter. Controls for the contrast, image effects and size can also be accessed easily and you can switch to video recording mode simply by flicking the joystick up.The display is a large TFT so can be viewed even in bright sunshine. It has 262k colours and a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels.
The W810i has an excellent stereo MP3 player and an FM RDS radioThe Walkman music player button on the front of your phone instantly activates the music player and plays the last track you were listening to. The RDS feature on the FM radio brings information from the radio station directly to the phone's display. With 20MB of internal memory and the option to expand this to 512MB with an external memory card, you can store up to 175 songs on your phone.
It has a 40-voice polyphonic sound enabling 40 notes to be played simultaneously so the polyphonic and MP3 ringtones sound good.Bluetooth, USB and infrared are the three connections available for this phone. Using the USB cable allows you to connect your phone to a PC, whilst Bluetooth and infrared are a wireless connection to another device with the same capabilities. The range for Bluetooth can be up to 10 metres apart. The W810i has a full-function internet browser that connects with EDGE giving you up to three times faster communication rates then GPRS.This phone operates on a quad-band frequency so is capable of working in Europe, America and Japan. The battery life is also really good as it has a standby of 350 hours.Overall this phone is great value for money with top features such as the Walkman music player and camera. With excellent memory you can use these great features to their full extent. We would definitely recommend this phone.Features of the Sony Ericsson W810i include:

Sony Walkman W810i Mobile Phone

In my humble opinion the very best phone Sony have produced to date. None of the problems like the K series joystick lack of functionality due to dirt ingress, robust design (and I have dropped every one of the three I have owned - often on concrete) and an excellent battery life to boot! Discontinued by Sony these phones are well worth getting hold of even as a backup.

They are easy to use with good sized buttons. It is rare to press a key you didn't intend to and the only bit you have to keep an eye on is fluff entering the memory stick cover on the side. It take a Pro Duo type which is compatible across quite a few of the Sony range - I interchange mine with my T7 Cybershot camera. Easy to connect to PC although I wouldn't recommend using the Sony software - if you have XP or higher just plug and play. The camera is reasonable quality and has quite a few features. The light can be used independently which makes it extremely useful as a torch. On a number of occasions I have forgotten to switch the light off and have never had the phone go flat before I managed to turn it off - sometimes 6+ hours!

The Walkman headphones can be slightly difficult to seat comfortably in your ear sometimes and because the outer soft rubber cup is so soft they can fall out if you don't clip the cable to your shirt/jacket/tie/other garment. Excellent sound quality for a phone and various equalizer settings (with Mega Bass! - oooh!) makes using it as a Walkman easy. The microphone is sensitive and generally handles other background noise quite well.

Connectivity is good with Bluetooth and all the headsets I have used have good range. The shape is convenient (even if it is a little boring) for most generic car cradles - just don't put it on the top of the dash and expect it to stay there when you corner! It is not the lightest phone and will exit stage left.

All in all an excellent all rounder for my purposes and durable beyond all reasonable expectations. If you keep to the original Sony battery it should last at least three years (all mine have) - in fact I have not had to buy a replacement battery yet. Even for the second hand one I bought as an emergency backup a year ago!

It is not hip and trendy but if you need a phone that will stand the test of time I highly recommend it.

Sony Ericsson Walkman W810i Mobile Phone

A great phone with super features including a 2Megapixel camera, and MP3 Walkman player.

Including all the Sony software there is very little more you could ask from this model of phone. I have now purchased two of these for members of my family who use them as "entertainment centres" with the numerous games which can be played on them while listening to music, calander for important appointments, a fully functional camera with zoom lens which many others do not and reasonable quality video recording. Oh yes and you can call people on it as well as a phone !!

Battery life is fairly good even with all this activity going on and can be fast charged back to life very quickly.

There is also a "Walkman" fast button to get you to what you want to use quickly, a "in flight" mode on switch on is also an option so you can use it on an aircraft purely as a MP3 player and nothing else.

Numerous accessories are available for it, replacement covers, protective covers, etc

Having looked at other phones on the market this is still available new to contract customers of many suppliers but is becoming readily available on ebay as other users are being offer more upgrades to the latest phones, this one in most cases is less than a year since it was new and in great demand, in some cases asking a premium due to the demand.

Really worth buying if you can one for a bargain.

Curate's Egg

I was after an MP3 player/phone combination and after reading all the reviews, this was widely acclaimed as the best available.
I like the phone as a unit, by modern standards it's relatively chunky with a reassuring weight and aesthetically it's a good looker.
After owning Nokias for years I find the keypad layout a little difficult to navigate but I'm sure it's just a question of time. The MP3 playing capabilities are stunning and the sound quality through the provided headset is as good as any I've heard, whether from a phone or dedicated media player (including ipods). It has been upgraded with a 4 gig memory card which is currently half full with about 40 albums on it.
It has a good camera but this is over-complicated by too many options - it is, after all, only 2 Mega pixels and inevitably the picture quality is limited.
One down side of the phone comes with phone operation. I text a lot and the keypad is far from precise. The buttons are occasionally vague which doesn't inspire confidence and the key labels are very hard to see in the dark as the back lighting is too subtle for me.
My main gripe however is the disc to phone software used for transferring MP3 files to the memory card. It is possible to transfer files to the card using other methods but the phone is very likely to fail to recognise them, this then causes a domino effect can affect the integrity of other files on the card. To be sure, one has to use the provided software and it takes an age. My computer is a very fast, high end machine but it still takes 5-10 minutes to load an album onto the phone. For me this is a major drawback on a phone which is aimed at this particular market.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the phone but there's no doubt it could be better!
Would I recommend it? Yes, if your music is important to you then you won't find a better phone/mp3 player out there at the moment (although I haven't had a chance to play with the new W960 yet).

Great phone, tough, and simple to use

I've had like most probably between 10 and 20 phones and for the first time I've actually decided to buy a 2nd one of these! With the market now flooded with touch screens gadgets, widgets and features there is just nothing out there that fits my criteria..
So here are 10 reasons why you should own this phone:
1) Small
2) Lightweight (less than 100g)
3) Good camera
4) Decent music player
5) Fast to respond
6) No fuss layout
7) Has Bluetooth for hands free
8) Sync’s via a cable
9) Robust
10) Straight forward push buttons

I do have another reason and that’s all buttons are ergonomically placed..

Don’t get me wrong it has had faults the camera stopped working. I could press the camera button and it would go into the viewfinder mode I couldn't press it again to focus and take the shot. Although in its defence I've now had it two years, and used it every day whilst I've been doing up my house, I've dropped it too many times to mention, had it covered in dust etc.. Which I'm sure has contributed to the camera fault. The only other issue or more of a gripe was the power/connection cable sometime you have to wiggle it to get a connection although that can also be contributed to the dust or maybe 3rd party chargers.

I did send the phone back to Sony which at the time thought it was still under warranty for the camera, once there they said it wasn't so I asked them to return it as they wanted £40. And that brings me to why I've bought the exact same phone.. For £40 second hand I have a newer phone with a 4 GB card (something I kept meaning to buy).

If anyone can recommend a phone that matches my criteria let me know in two years I might just buy it ;)
