not much of an improvement

I've played the original Revolutions: Persona, and the PSP update sports mostly superficial changes. Despite the all new cut scenes, new sound track (why?), the new world map, Mark being white, a new difficulty selection, and putting the Ice Queen quest back in the RPG aspect has remained unchanged. Not a good thing. Compared to the newer games in the series, Persona 1 is antiquated posessing common old-school jRPG flaws that hurt the game's enjoyment: there's a high encounter rate, you'll sometimes need to grind experience, and the graphics are dull and repeptitive in addition to a lot of really bad design choices made for this game.

there is a bright side to the remake though: Atlus did two things to make this game less painful. One is a feature that allows you to fast forward battles. The other is a difficulty select. The original PS version had a brutal difficulty where enemies would ambush you constantly and lots of them would instant-death you or status effect you to death. The normal difficulty for this update seems too easy in comparison.

As for Persona itself, being an older game it has a lot of poor design choices that make playing it annoying or burdensome.

For starters, to make persona you have to negotiate with enemies for their cards to use in the velvet room. Negotiating with enemies is a guessing game and its extremely annoying trying to get these cards.

Another issue is Persona's levelling system is needlessly complicated. Each character has a persona level in addition to their own normal level and the experience for both is split depending on how you fight battles. Each persona you make has its own level restriction, so if your character has persona level 24 you cant use that persona level 25 until you level up. Leveling up your persona involves spamming persona attacks during battle.

Another problem is Personae have set skills and these skills are unlocked as you rank them up during battle. This is annoying for a variety of reasons. First many persona have garbage skill sets. The other is you rank up personae by spamming their abilities in battles.

Finally the absolute worst thing about Persona is the battle system. Battles take place on a grid and each character's weapon and persona have an area of effect. If an enemy is outside your target range, guess what? You can't do anything to them. Its really annoying!

Since I originally wrote this review, my opinion has since changed. Persona hasn't aged well. At all. Its not fun. Its annoying and cumbersome to play. And there's that key moment mid-game where if you make the wrong dialoge choice you get stuck with the lame ending. Persona 3 and 4 have ironed out a lot of what didn't work for this series. That being said, I wouldn't recommend this game unless you want to experience an old style and stale feeling jRPG.

Fantastic Game even though it's Old

The Game is phenomenal! It's an old game but it's worth a try if you like story, long games, and JRPG elements. A must collect item!

You get what you pay for

I'm just one of those crazy enough to buy a game that is needlessly expensive. I love the Persona series, this was the lowest price. It is what it is. Game at least was in great condition. I just wish it was easier to get games like this without the loss of both an arm and a leg.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Old school J-RPG fun

This is a good old school style RPG. The isometric controls take a little getting used to but once you're used to them they aren't a problem.

I like how the battle system is set up and how it makes you pick your moves in a strategic fasion. There are MANY random battles but you'll be used to that if you're in to old school J-RPGs.

It's not perfect but it's really good and the story re-write makes a big difference from the original. If you are a Mega-ten fan, this is a must have.

Better with age.

Persona is just one of those games, much like Final Fantasy 6 (3 in the states when it was originally released), that just gets better with every remake. I remember playing the game when it first came out on Playstation, and they've changed very little from then. The main thing they added was the Snow Queen "quest", which is actually an entirely different storyline, meaning you can only take the "SEBEC route" or the "Snow Queen route" in 1 playthrough. If you like RPGs, especially ones you can play on the move, I would suggest seriously considering this game.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

challenging, complex very rich story line i love this rare rpgs from atlus

i bought cause i am a fan of this series

what i like is that the game is complex and has a rich story. From this game came out devil summoner series.

What i dislike maybe is that it too many things to take into perspective might distract you from the main storyline and if you played just P3 and P4 you're not gonna like the this game.Vollständige Rezension lesen...
