Simple to use and effective

They work exactly as their datasheet describes (it can be found by searching for "GP2Y0A41SK0F datasheet"), pin 1 is the sensor output, pin 2 is ground, pin 3 is power. If using the supplied cable, pin 1 is yellow, pin 2 black, pin 3 red. I tested one using 5V and my hand as the target, and the output pin 1 measured 0.06V at more than a metre, 0.12V at 50cm, 0.56V at 30cm (this would be the voltage guaranteed to switch a transistor, so the advertised range is perfect), rising with shorter distances to a maximum of 2.90V at a distance of 4cm as advertised, dropping to roughly 1.4V at 0cm.

I bought them on a whim, and am planning to try them out in a cat entertainment device I'm designing, as well as some DIY toy lanterns (wave your hand to control them), and perhaps DIY proximity-activated Halloween decorations although the longer-range models would be more suitable there. Additional circuity is required for this device to be useful, it just produces a signal, you still need something that acts on that signal (either a simple transistor switch, or a microprocessor, etc).

Works great

Sensor works great - just keep the 4cm short-range limit in mind. Analog values from the sensor are unreliable at very short distances.
