Great Pickup - Just Not for this Particular Guitar

Some time back I put an SH-5 in my fave 2009 Les Paul Traditional. I bought this one for a new 2016 Traditional. Different guitar - different results. The '09 sounds awesome with lots of thickness and yet note clarity. A really awesome improvement. The '16 continues to have clarity issues. Is it better than with the stock '57 Classic? Yes, but not as much as I'd hoped. It's not the fault of Duncan...It's just a different piece of wood with the same microphone...Sometimes I think you just need to cut your losses and get a different guitar rather than change the pickups.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Addicting

The Duncan custom is by far my favorite pickup. Installed it in my Gibson studio playing through my vox ac30. The gain is powerful and very aggressive. The cleans stay crystal clear while playing with no breakup like most high out pickups. Definitely buying another to install in a telecasterVollständige Rezension lesen...

Vintage/Distortion Lovechild

This pickup is in a 2014 Gibson SG Standard. The guitar also has a machined steel ABR bridge by Callaham guitars, a machined brass tailpiece by GFS on Tone Pros studs.
The guitar came with Gibson '57 Classics with alnico II magnets (I'm pretty sure they had alnico V when they first came out in the early '90's) which were muddy and gave gravelly, dark overdrive to my VOX AC30C2 and THD Flexi 50 and matching cab with Creamback '65's.
After that came the DiMarzio PAF Pro and PAF Joe (my first disappointment with that great company) followed by the new Master Class PAF Bridge and neck set. These are great but the bridge unit wasn't for me though I recommend checking it out.
The Seymour Duncan SH-5 is a great midpoint, output-wise, between maybe a Duncan '59 or DiMarzio PAF and a DiMarzio Super Distortion. Tone-wise, it's pretty much vintage - even with the ceramic magnet. Very sweet tone with plenty of harmonics and overtones and almost no snarky '808's midrange typical of a nice ceramic humbucker (I almost miss it at times) But Duncan does specify a "small ceramic magnet". Incidentally it has an almost identical coil impedance of the S.D.
Whatever they did, if you like vintage tone with obviously boosted output then get this.
