Red Dawn: The 1984 Original

Red Dawn: condemned as paranoid anti-communist drivel. Well, ok, but what are you going to do? If you want to make a war movie, especially one fought on American soil; then you need an antagonist.

Canada? Geographically convenient, but just too comical (Look out! It's Dan Akroyd and John Candy! The Canadians are coming!)

Jamaica? Remember those bob sledders? Definitely high on something. So Cuba with some help from friends is what we have.

More interesting is the idea of what would you do if placed in the same situation? None of the boys had military experience. Their immediate motive was to survive, not to become resistance fighters. The film shows a slow transformation (seeing how the people were treated in the camp in town, getting news from Ben Johnson, accidentally coming into contact with some enemy soldiers on leave in the mountains, etc.)

Eventually, they are able to create some havoc, but by no means are they ever what you might call a crack military unit. I found the interactions between the individuals much more interesting. Early on, when the Mayor's son stands up to make a motion, "As student body president of Calumet High School..."

The town just got shot up by an army of unknown origin, and this bozo thinks ASB president makes him qualified to take charge? Too funny.

The girl's crush on the downed pilot is also interesting. It reminds us that she is a young girl, not a hardened soldier.

Jed is doing the best that he can with limited resources, but clearly he is no great strategist.

The acting is not top notch, but still the story drew me in. It is definitely escapist entertainment, and if you are prone to dissecting scenes for plausibility.... well, you might find some of the bits hard to swallow.

All in all, I give it four stars. I mean, Charlie Sheen and automatic weapons. What a glimpse into the future.

Red Dawn (DVD, 1998)

It is still the Cold War in America and one day without any warning, planes start flying over the high school and paratroopers are filling the sky. This is in the Heartland of America. Nobody knows what is happening, but as the soldiers hit the ground, they begin firing automatic weapons and shooting anybody around. A few of the boys hop into a truck and quickly get away. Soon they find out that the soldiers are Cuban and Russian soldiers and that the country has been invaded. These are country boys who are accustomed to hunting, camping, and living off the land. It is soon apparent that the United States has been invaded. They collect as much food and weapons that they can carry and head for the mountains and wide open spaces to hide. Eventually, they are faced to begin a guerrilla war with the invaders. They hit them as they can and are soon hunted. Hundreds of townspeople are shot in reprisal. Their constant acts of sabotage are the beginning of the roust of these invaders. Many more Americans begin to fight back until the invaders are ultimately defeated.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Is the Past the Future?

The original Red Dawn, well written, well acted. The re-do not nearly as gritty, nor realistic. In these days of Russian political influence with a POTUS who favors Putin, this movie, even though made in the past, can serve as a warning as to what is possible without patriotic vigilance. Enjoyable

Caught the first half on cable one night and found the movie on here for a reasonable price so I could finish it.
