Grinder. Not really a sharpener.
The grinder is on a plastic base with 4 tiny screw holes close to the edge which are just waiting to be snapped.
The grinding stone is way too course for sharpening it’s more of a metal removing stone that wears very quickly and is very poor quality.
The leather strop side is terrible big old plastic disc with a bit of leather on and it’s lumpy the knife bounces as it has been glued on but very uneven.
It’s quite a noisy machine. And there’s not a lot really going for it I was really hoping for a much better Finnish.
For £260 I wish I had spent on some proper Chinese wet stones and guides and continued to sharpen by hand.

Excellent value for money
This machine offers really good value for money - sure you can get better for a massive jump in price but for the home workshop it really is a no brainer. Be prepared to spend sometime setting up the machine and you will need to decide on material removal or sharpening (although the wheel can be re-dressed for either when needed). The water wheel is well designed and there is little splashing or leakage when in use. Whilst the ends of the unit are plastic this should not present a problem - reference to another review stating the little holes are begging to break is non relevant as I see the unit being portable - not fixed down (why would it have a carrying handle otherwise?). Leather honing strip will be bumpy to start with but it should be prepared with mineral oil and it will wear in.
Tip - oil up surfaces prone to rusting.
Comes with a five year guarantee - make sure this is registered ASAP for product support. Regarding Record's support - I have rarely needed to use them but where I have the service has been excellent - that includes products well out of the guarantee period.
The wheel will wear out - it is designed to do this as are the stones on other machines - when it does you can purchase another to your needs.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Good buy
Good solid value for money as with all Record stuff. My standard chisel and plane blades came up like razors...happy days on them! I've acquired the rigs for all my carving tools...yet to be tried.
