James Carter is a titan of the saxophone. He plays the full range of horns on this great album. His tone and phrasing place him squarely among the legendary greats. His choice of material is top-notch. He runs the gambit from free improvisation to standard cool. This is great, because it somehow makes the free stuff far more accessible to listeners who may have previously struggled to understand it. This album provides a crucial link.
