Great quality photos can be made with this lens.

Here is the other lens I got for my wife that made me jealous. The Nikkor 55-200mm DX VR. This is an amateur lens with professional performance. Once again, Nikon got it right in designing a "kit" lens aimed at the occasional photographer that delivers at a bargain price.

One of the things that I noticed is its' lack of distortion throughout the entire zoom range. I am not saying its' not there, just held to a minimum. Pincushion is present once past the 55mm mark, but for normal sized prints, who will notice? Besides, how many prints end up in a New York gallery for all to see? And if you are that picky about someone elses' prints, you need to lay off the caffeine and get a life.

As with the 18-55mm AF-S VR lens, light falloff is practically unnoticeable throughout the entire zoom range, provided you shoot at f/8 or stopped down more. Wide open at 200mm it is visible but not to a distraction.

As far as size and weight goes, it is not that much larger than its' sister lens, the 18-55mm AF-S VR. Published weight is right at 11 ounces, making it only 3 ounces heavier. Length-wise, it is only one inch longer than its' sister.

And the crown in this jewel, the VR or vibration reduction. Once again, my wife has had no problems hand-holding this lens at 200mm at slow shutter speeds and still get sharp photos.

But the plastic construction rears its' ugly head again. Nikon saved the consumer money in exchange for durability. I have stopped watching my wife photograph because I know she will run into something and destroy a lens and/or camera. If it is only the lens, oh well, I'll just buy her another one, they're inexpensive enough.

The beauty of this lens is its' compact size and light weight coupled with the Vibration Reduction. It is capable of great quality at an affordable price and will please most. I know, I got me one, too. That's how jealous I was of this lens.

Outstanding first telephoto lens to buy for your Nikon camera!

Pretty much your standard mid-range lens for all Nikon DX cameras such as the D3000 series, D5000 series, etc. It will also fit on and work with higher end Nikon cameras such as the D5, but that is not typically the target market for this lens.

It has autofocus and image stabilization like other lenses in this range, and for the price it is very well suited as a telephoto lens for photographers new to Nikon cameras. In fact, this lens is the ideal first lens to buy if a new Nikon user is looking to expand beyond the standard 55mm lens that typically comes with these cameras, particularly for new D3000 and D5000 series users. It is lightweight and well-made but consists of primarily plastic components on the outer shell. It is good for occasional and even regular use, but is not designed for rugged environments like all-metal professional lenses are, which of course also go for more than three times the price of this lens for the same focal length.

Canon VS Nikon

Being my first Nikon I have been comparing it side by side to a T3 and t2i, with very similar lens. There are plus and minus to each camera and this lens has to be one of my favorite. Good zoom but maintaining a little wider image then canon, overall a little better true color capture over the canon 55-250mm. Surprisingly this lens is a little smaller then the canon counter part. and almost about the same size as the 18-55mm lens. SO great for bag space. Definitely worthy of your 2nd lens or your first zoom for a good price.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Lens is perfect for mid level photos and great for distant shots worth it.

Had to get another lens in addition to the kit lens (18-55mm) which was a good move. Nice close up shots. Taking pictures from a distance is essential. No, I'm not saying from never never land. But you can be in the mist of a crowd and get good close up shoots. I always go over the top regarding my research of things. I,m glad I follow that practice. The lens is avg from doing a lot of reading but decent and works well with my Nikon d3200. Real quick focus is a plus. Unless you're a professional photographer this lens is more than efficient for your shoots. Great zoom photos. No complaints at all. As I get better with more experience using my 1st DSLR camera then I'll move up (lens) accordingly. You won't go wrong especially at the price I paid. Hey everyone do your homework do your research and you will always come out on top. Again, great lens for the price.

Sharp all plastic lens with excellent optics and no VR, Vibration Reduction

This product is excellent. I just finished shotting a wedding and the pictures truned out great. It is sharp and quick focused. The draw backs are that it is completely plastic including the mount and it is not the newer version which has VR (Vibration Reduction, highly reccomended). You must be careful with it because of the plastic mount and cannot pick up the camera with it. It is a DX lens and will not work on film or FX format cammeras. A used in excellent condition lens should run from $75-90. For the Picture quality it is a good deal.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Good addition if in a budget. Not match for new versions, but will deliver

This is a good addition if you want your second set of lenses if you are new to photography and Nikon cameras - also in a budget -, awesome for mid-long range pictures, mostly nature. A drawback is the lack of a VR system, included in newer versions of it, what causes long range pictures in low light to appear blurred. Another drawback is the focusing system, that is not as efficient and handy as you wold like, but can be worked on; and sometimes is preferable to the seemingly slow auto-focus servos. Still, you are going to love it.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Nikkor 55=200mm 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED AF-S DX Lens

Why I bought it
The standard 18 – 55 mm lens that came with my D60 Nikon camera is ok for general photography, but lacks the zoom ability for close-up photography without extensive editing with additional software. This reduces the resolution of the picture. So I went one step up to the 55 – 200mm zoom lens.
There are several reasons I purchased this particular version of the Nikkor 55-200mm lens. First, since I use a tripod for most of my pictures the VR (Vibration Reduction) feature of the more expensive version of this lens was not applicable. Second, this lens allows me to zoom in to the subject or zoom out for a wide view without changing lenses. Third, the auto focus and aperture controls make it easy to use in many different situations.

What I like most about it
As with all the Nikkor AF-S DX series lenses, the interface between the lens and camera body make using these lenses very simple. And the quality of the Nikon optics is a world wide standard.

What I dislike about it
At this time I do not have anything that I dislike about this lens.

Sharp image, low price, excellent focus

I purchased, this lens as used one. And it work as new one.
Pros: Great quality, Sharp at whole range. Chromatic abberation and fringing is negligible. Auto focus is very fast. Color are natural, no color distortion is seen. Brightness is acceptable, but computer enhancement improve it. VR works well. Low light performance is just OK, at the bottom line.

Cons: VR is little bit noisy, you can listen motor sound clearly. You can not use MF when hood is on, in its reverse position, it covers the focus ring. So take off the hood or put it upright. This does not look attractive, like tamron lenses, they physically look, more expensive and have very facinating construction. The mount is plastic, so after couple of uses, it gives plastic dust, which enters in camera, and sits tightly, I got one on my D5000 focus screen, Hard to remove by blower.
Many people buy this lens for telephoto and portrait, but in my openion this lens is useless for both purpose. The object is not enough close even at 200 mM. You will see it just a little bit closer than what you see with your eyes. SO it is not usefull for the objects which are really far away. Like sports and wild-life photography. For portraits this lens it too sharp, you may need a soft filter. I will rather recommend a 35 or 50 mm prime lens with low F-value. That will give you enough depth of the field, without going 15-20 feet away from the human object.

Bottom line- lens itself is great, but not much useful for a photographer.
