Nikon Coolpix P80 Underestimated Digital Camera

I ordered this digital camera for several reasons. First, it is a Nikon and I've owned at least a dozen Nikon cameras and lenses. Second, it was small, great optical zoom and good pixel rating. I didn't think it was going to be an outstanding piece of photography equipment because of the price. I was DEAD wrong. This camera takes amazing pictures. The "VR" allows for taking images even when you have shaky hands. Zoom is ultra clear and even in low light doesn't magnify the movement noticeably. Controls are easy to use and precise. There are a couple negative features or lack of that concern me. First, the main control on the back just above the menu button is in the wrong place. You can't turn the camera on or off if you are touching this button. This is where you seem to want to hold the camera so it's not in a good place. There is no hot shoe or photo sync for flash. I have a flash with a wireless trigger or I would be in trouble. The cameras on board flash works surprisingly well but I like bouncing the flash. Finally, I do NOT like propriety batteries on any piece of equipment. The battery pack is small and easy to use but I wish it used AA batteries. Other than that, it's a fantastic camera all the way around. With the ability to completely use the camera manually, it makes sense to buy it whether you are a seasoned photographer or a new "picture taker". I highly recommended this camera to everyone. It's a great camera and you can buy it at the right price on Ebay.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Good overall camera - Decent macro mode for the money.

I purchased this camera new a couple of years ago, primarily to take better photos for my eBay listings. Overall, the camera has done what I have asked of it fairly well and I feel it was a good value for the price. I sell quite a few coins on eBay and taking photos of such items requires a decent macro mode on the camera. Of course, the best option would be a DSLR camera witha great macro lens for around 5-10x the money. But with this camera, the macro mode is good enough to take decent images of small items like coins. Of course, larger coins like half dollar and silver dollars come out very clear and detailed. But when imaging smaller coins like cents or dimes, the images can be a little grainy, even on the highest quality setting which is 10.1 megapixels. Also, the camera is now a few years old and quite bulky compared to a newer model that can do the same things. This was rarely a problem though, except that when I used the camera on a small tripod it was a bit top heavy and easy to tip over. One cool feature is that the camera came with a rechargable battery and charger. For taking eBay photos, I found the battery lasted a decent amount of time. The battery charged quickly enough as well so it was never a big problem and much preferred vs. having to buy batteries all of the time! ===== Please vote if you have found this review helpful and/or interesting, thanks!Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Great camera at a great price, a fun way to be serious

When I started shooting photos for my Ebay listings, I was really a novice, so bought an older Nikon coolpix, and it opened up a new world for me. The early one took rechargable batteries and was kind of a pain as the batteries didn't last long enough.
However, my shots really began to improve with the purchase of a Coolpix P80, a camera model which by now is almost outdated-- as Nikon does nothing but continue to improve its cameras. I really love the camera not only for good shots of merchandise so long as the light is decent, but also I like to take it on road trips and shoot pictures right out of the car window. There are many editing programs out there to use with your completed shots, and I generally crop things and straighten them. Another feature that is a real plus is that you can carry more than one memory card with the camera and store huge amounts on it. Also, I have two genuine Nikon batteries which I rotate. I charge one while the other is in use.
This present camera is a real workhorse and makes me feel almost like a pro. I plan on using it until it wears out and then buy another of the even better models made by Nikon.
For a beginner like me who will never become a pro photographer, the coolpix still has features I virtually never use.

Nikon's Point-N-Shoot P80

I bought this camera for my wife. It is her first digital camera. She loves photography and does it for the pure joy of a beautiful picture. Strictly amateur but she has taken some great pictures. She found the P80 to be pretty easy to learn for basic shooting. Also liked the pre-programmed scenes that Nikon has on all their cool-pix cameras. This model is out of manufacture now, but that means there are some great deals on it available.

I like the 18x zoom but you need pretty good light. In poor light the quality suffers. Taking photos in the shadows in the park work ok but do not show the resolution of photos taken in bright sun.

Battery life seems really good.

The flash has pretty good reach. My wife's old camera's flash only seemed to work up to about 7 or 8 feet and then it just faded out. The P80 flash seems to be strong enough to light up objects over twice that distance. The built in pop up flash is very handy.

Connected the camera to my PC with the provided USB cable and you can automatically load your pictures into a directory under 'My Pictures' with todays date as the folder title. Or you can use Explorer and the P80 shows up just like a disc drive and you can copy and delete pictures in Explorer.

I had to run some of her daylight pictures through a software enhancer to take out what appears to be too much brightness sometimes. Gives a slightly foggy look to some of the pics, but not all the time. Don't know why. Might be corrected with an ultraviolet filter on the lens.

Overall very satisfied with the camera. If it wasn't for the poorer low light resolution and the sometimes too bright looking pictures in daylight I would give it an excellent rating.

My review of the Nikon P80

I upgraded to the P80 from the Nikon 5700 mainly for video. The 5700 did not have video and the P80 did. After having the P80 for a few days I have decided I prefer my 5700 picture quality better than the P80 but it still takes great pictures if in the right conditions. It does not do well in dim lighting but I have that issue with all cameras really. The video quality was ok but not top quality as I expected. In the bright sun (even facing AWAY from the sun) bright sunray looking lines were down through my videos and were not crisp clear as I had anticipated. Also in every video there is a slight noise from the camera, not a grinding noise but definately a noticable noise. All in all I would say this is a good camera for beginners and somewhat inexpensive. I also tried the Fujifilm Finepix camera before purchasing the P80 and DO NOT recommend doing so. I had nothing but issues with the Finepix by Fujifilm. The P80 is simple and easy to use and I love the bigger screen on it! If you are using anything other than an SLR or SLR-like camera then I definately recommend this camera for you. You will be impressed with the picture quality compared to non SLR and SLR-Like cameras.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

This is easy to use with beginner icons & clear photos.

I liked that it was a bit larger with a hand hold similar to better 35m cameras. I liked that it had a large digital screen and easy to understand icons. The battery has a long life, the built-in flash is great and photos come out great when downloaded from my card. I didn't like that the screen was easily scratched with no cover as with an Ipod or DS. The dials were all within easy to push reach without having to take your eye off subject to search. I have had similar digital cameras, but this one seems to produce better photographs. It is lightweight, yet substantial. I decided to buy it because the less expensive digital cameras I have purchased in the past didn't hold up very well and were not consistently taking good photos. I am pleased with this one so far. I have been taking photos all day.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Less substantial, but very efficient and easy to use!

Feels significantly less substantial and lesser quality, than say a CoolPix 8700. With less heft, no comfortable grips, no tilt-screen and you have to manually open the flash.... this camera feels cheaper for sure.

HOWEVER -- it is such an fantastic bare bones model for taking snapshots and simple photos for online!! GREAT zoom, macro, custom scenes and it is much more USER FRIENDLY! The menus are easy to switch between and the trigger response it great too. I really like the P80.

I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great camera at a great deal!

Good in expensive point-and-shoot

With 10.1mp and an 18x zoom this camera takes quick and easy photos. Photo quality is good and there are'nt too many setting to confuse the beginner. Makes an excellent camera for travel as it's light weight and not bulky. Vollständige Rezension lesen...

One of the best non-dslr cameras I have ever seen

The camera looks good, feels good, and takes great pictures. The fps mode isn't what it was cracked up to be, and it takes a little time to understand all the different modes, but after you figure everything out, then you are set to go. The shutter is very fast, as is the focus. Takes great pictures on auto for the casual buyer, but also has a ton of features. Great camera overall, with a little work, could be the best camera. Canon edges it out just by a tad, but so does the price. I would recommend this camera to anyone who doesn't want a dslr camera, but wants great pictures.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Nikon P80 OK Camera

Got my camera the other day. It is OK for a point and shoot. Zoom is really nice. Interior shots are not as good as outside shots. Camera takes a while to get good shots. The scene programing is nice. Does not have RAW Format. That would be nice. The lens cap is really bad it always falls off. You can take pics pretty quick, I like that you do not have to wait between shots. It also comes up from off to ready to go in about 3 - 4 seconnds. Pretty good. The battery last great, I have about 300 shots at High resolution so far and it still has 3/4 charge. You can get extra batteries at e-bay for only $4.00 each.

As Title says OK Camera. Does some things very good and inside shots not so good.
