NIKON D5700

I bought this camera for a mate who has taken up photography, he was having trouble (in certain lighting conditions) seeing the screen on his compact camera. I was so taken with the D5700 that I bought one for myself. (My camera bag now weighs a ton), D80 plus lenses, flash, and ring flash, ( I like insects) photographing not eating them, and the D5700 also I have a Nikon coolpix 5600in my pocket. Macro photography with the D5700 is a breeze in daylight but not inside using the inbuilt flash. The lens cuts off the flash to the lower part of the frame.(Only to be expected ) So, on the whole a very good camera and its a good bridge between a compact camera and a full blown S.L.R.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Excellent, great value for money.

Excellent, great value for money. Given age, takes really great 'photos, better than our digital slr which was much more expensive. Solid, will take a knock. Delivery was quick, camera well packaged.

Prone to sensor fault

These cameras are very good... up until the CCD sensor fails, and then it's useless. This is a known fault and was the subject of a Nikon recall (now expired), so if it goes black then you're stuffed.

A Gem with Acceptable Flaws

I have used Nikon cameras, film and digital, for more than a quarter of a century and the COOLPIX 5700 was bought as an everyday unit offering greater versatility than my two pocketable COOLPIX models. Because it is not always convenient to carry my Nikon DSLR I was looking for something that would offer the best of both worlds. I have not been disappointed. The quality is all one would expect from this manufacturer and once the protocols are learnt, it is fairly easy to use.
Its operation is not always the most intuitive and it would have benefited from a command dial offering manual or the range of automatic settings available. The need to enter the, admittedly easy to navigate, menu makes it necessary to carefully consider what one is photographing and how one wishes to capture images in advance of tripping the shutter. Keeping the camera at Program Automatic is the best choice if, like me, you want to take 'grab shots'. The reasonably fast start-up does not impede this ability to any great extent but the need for the lens to set itself means it will never beat a DSLR to the shot. It is though, only ever a minor inconvenience.
Flash coverage is fine from the built-in unit but being able to attach a dedicated flashgun adds usefully to the versatility of this camera.
The electronic viewfinder is remarkably good although it cannot ever be compared with the speed and accuracy of the optical system in a 'normal' (D)SLR. The folding viewing screen is often the best option for composing a picture or following movement.
With a budget that limited my purchase to a used model, I have been delighted, although, when funds allow I intend to upgrade to an 8800 or similar Nikon COOLPIX camera. In the meantime, even with the minor flaws involving speed of use and limitations of intuitiveness, I shall continue to enjoy using the Nikon COOLPIX 5700. It is a gem.

handling problems let down an otherwise excellent cam

The Nikon 5700 is one of those cameras that looks larger in photos than it really is. The solid magnesium body is appreciably smaller than other pro-sumer cams such as the Minolta Dimage 7i or the Fuji S602. As a result anyone with large hands may find the body too small, although the upside is that it is both lighter and easier to carry than the aforementioned rivals. The zoom range is a bit shy at wide angle (35mm) but excellent at telephoto lengths (280mm), although shooting at full extension leads to camera shake in anything less than good sunlight. Focusing at 280mm takes a bit longer, too, but when the system locks on you can be sure of a sharp pic. The electronic viewfinder flashes red brackets to show where the camera's point of focus is - you can change this using the four-way button on the back of the camera body.
Despite the plethora of buttons and the top mount control wheel accessing anything more than full auto is stupidly difficult -- press a button, use the wheel, press more buttons to change settings etc. At least you have three customisable set-ups and the N5700 doesn't lose its way when the battery goes flat (which is too often because the small lithium cell only has 750 mah to go on). If you like shooting hundreds of pics every day I recommend the option battery grip (MB-E5700) which takes 6 AA batteries for a longer run time.
Fans of HDR (high dynamic range) photography will be gladden to know that the 5700 can shoot raw as well as jpeg and the bracketing extends to +/- 2.0 ev over five frames. I tried this and the results were excellent.
Overall, the pictures are good provided you stay away from ISO 400 (which produces too much noise in dark areas) and the settings (when you drill down though the menus) are extensive.
Just set aside an evening to thoroughly study the well written manual.

Coolpix 5700

I bought this model as an economic addition to other (more modern) cameras that I generally use. Even though it has been around for about 6yrs, it was released in 2002, it offers one or two facilities and modes which I thought would be useful.

Before purchasing, I read many reviews, both professional and amateur. These reviews all commented about the superb optics, above average build quality and relative ease of use for a "prosumer" model. The usual negative point was the common failure of the original sensor.

Obviously, with a camera of this age, there are no "face recognition" or low light focusing aides. The latter causes the focusing to be a little slow to auto-focus under certain conditions, but this has not been a major problem so far, it generally performs well and is usually very accurate. Macro focus is easy to use as it functions in the mid-zoom range and has produced some impressive results.

There are no "scene" modes but anyone with a grasp of basic photography will not find this a problem. The software offers 3 "User Modes" in the menu thus allowing you to quickly set the camera up to your personal requirements for 3 quickly selected modes.

Picture "noise" levels are very good and the 5700 produces clean shots, far better than some modern cameras, although I have not as yet used it frequently at the fastest ASA settings available.

The Coolpix 5700 offers exceptional value/quality for money now that it has aged a little. I would strongly suggest that you only purchase one that has had the original sensor replaced (by Nikon, free, following an acknowledgement that the originals failed). Nikon also check and clean the camera and I believe they update the firmware to the latest release. Details can be found on their website.

NB: It would seem that the sensor often fails when the camera hasn't been used for a while.

It is reasonably quiet in operation, the size is surprisingly small and ergonomic with good weight and feel. The long zoom is a real asset.

True, many more modern cameras do offer higher resolutions and/or picture size but 5Mp is fine for the majority of shots and doesn't eat into memory too much.

I have found this camera to be very, very good; I find that I often use it instead of taking an SLR now.

Buy a good one and I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

ADDED MAY 2014: Probably a little too dated now :-(

There have been so many significant improvements to sensors and facilities in digital cameras that this model is now showing it's age. Good results but somewhat slow.

A Nikon Classic Digital

First of all a health warning - there is a known fault with this model. On some 5700s the monitor shows a sludgy image rather than the image you are viewing. The good news is, despite its age, Nikon still repair this fault for free. I got my back within a week, repaired, checked and cleaned. It is a CCD fault so they change it! If you are buying from eBay it will be worth asking about this problem. The only other issues for some digital photographers is that the fold out screen is a tiny 1.5 inches; however the electronic viewfinder is one of the best; and of course it is not a small camera but it has a superior build.
Everything else about this camera is good news: the lens is superb - a Nikkor ED; the CCD is more than twice the size of the more common one found in most other cameras and because of this the pixels are bigger and let in more light so therefore you get better colour definition and better depth of field.
The camera has all the modes and functions of a pro unit; it is an enthusiasts camera and it will help you understand digital photography as you use it.
