Get this is you have a full frame DSLR and want a constant f2.8 zoom.

I can't give you a technical review as I'm not qualified to do so, I can however say that if you need a top quality lens for a Nikon film or full frame camera and haven't got £1200 for a f2.8 24-70 this is the lens for you. Its a constant f2.8, built like a tank to pro standards and is lighter and more compact than the 24-70. This is a series of photos stitched together taken with the 35-70 a few days after I'd received the lens http://www.flickr.com/photos/leybald/7223110916/in/photostream (on a D700)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/leybald/6995826830/meta/in/photostream (on a D300)
There's no reason why you can't use this on a cropped sensor DSLR such as a D300 or D7000 but the focal length will be about 50-110mm.

The only criticism I have of the lens is that the whole of the end of the barrel rotates when its focussing, this could be a problem if you're using a polarising filter.

One kit lens!

As a one lens kit this is ideal. The relatively wide f2.8 over the whole focal length of the zoom is fast enough in most dim light situations. The 1/4 macro facility at 35mm is a bonus. It is of metal construction and robust, though not too heavy to drag around for hours. Images are sharp and well rendered. Now my go to lens for general purpose.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Unjustly overlooked mid-range zoom

Many would-be serious photographers (such as one Ken Rockwell) are dismissive of mid-range zooms, saying they are strictly for wedding hacks and family snapshots. In fact, they are usually the most useful lens of all. I never leave home without one (but perhaps that just proves I'm not terribly serious).

This 35-70mm f2.8 was Nikon's top pro mid-range zoom for years, until it was replaced by the more recent 28-70mm f2.8 - which has a slightly wider range, but also weighs a lot more, fills half your camera bag, costs a bomb, and does not have significantly superior optics. Since this lens was thus rendered "obsolete" it can be picked up very cheaply, especially considering not just the superb image quality - colour & sharpness are both excellent and bokeh is pretty good too - but also the extremely high standard of construction (NB it is small but NOT that light). True, 35mm does feel restrictive at times, but all in all this lens is impossible to beat at the price. Get one - you won't regret it.

Amazing pro quality zoom lens from Nikon at a bargain price. A must have!!!

This is an old lens.It was Nikon's flagship pro mid range zoom made between 1992 and 2005. It was eventually replaced in 1999 (I think) by the 28-70mm f2.8, but this lens was so popular they continued production due to demand.
The 35-70 f2.8 is a solid, well made, heavy lens. It is however a lot lighter than it's successor, with very similar optical performance, apart from the shorter zoom range at the short end.
Optically, it has f2.8 throughout the zoom range, and it's razor sharp, even wide open at any focal length.
It also has a macro setting, although it can only be used in macro at 35mm, and then rotating the zoom ring. Focus is manual when in macro mode.
There is very little aberration, and sharpness is great.
It is a push-pull zoom, which some don't like, but you soon get used to it.
In summary, this is a fantastic professional lens from Nikon at a fraction of the cost of a 24-70mm f2.8
My only slight concern with this lens is that it can flare when shooting into a direct light source, so always use a lens hood.
For the price, this lens is a must have .

Nikon 35-70 f2.8

Fantastic lens and great results on my D750. Not sure whether its better than the 24-70 but I am impressed by the results I get and for a fraction of the cost...plus its a lot lighter and very robustly built. Highly recommended if you can get one in great condition.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Old but not outdated

Nikon's 35-70mm f2.8D fixed aperture AF lens was a professional choice at one time. Its optical quality still matches its successors. If fast and silent autofocus are not your priorities then one of these lenses will not fail as some AF-S silent wave motors appear to have done when worked to death by professionals. The front element and hood rotate when focusing so using a polarising filter is impractical. The macro function is useful. A full-frame lens which will produce sharp images at reasonable cost and can be used with AF or manual.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

A good example would be great value for money but beware of the condition.

Please note the lens I got was not a D version as stated in the title and was not a good example, consequently I returned it and finished up buying the Nikon 24-70mm 2.8 lens instead.
The lens flared badly from any light source other than from behind, the focusing ring was loose and something rattled when it was shaken. The macro doesn't get close enough for it to be called a real macro lens and even then is only available at 35mm which is totally impractical.
However, had it been a good example , I would have been satisfied with the sharpness, overall build quality , quick auto focusing , practicality (weight is reasonable) and performance.

35-70mm 2.8f Nikkor

Excellent older version of the Nikkor 24-70mm 2.8f. Heavier weight shows just how solid the lens is made, packed with metal and glass.
Would definitely recommend every Nikon lover to purchase one of these perfectly made 35-70mm 2.8f Nikkors. Well worth the money.Vollständige Rezension lesen...
