A comprehensive monographic treatment of the USSR's first intercontinental jet bomber

Although this book shares the same title as a Red Star Series volume about the Myasishchev M-4 (NATO codename), it is basically an expanded version of the 2003 book published by Yefim Gordon. Of all the chapters of this book, Chapter 3 is a pretty lengthy section because it covers all built and unbuilt variants of the M-4, including the baseline M-4 (Bison-A), the improved 3M (Bison-B), the 3MD cruise missile carrier (Bison-C), the VM-28 , the M-29 passenger airliner and military transport, proposed M-4 versions for ASW, minelaying, and reconnaissance, and even a seaplane version of the 3M. Chapter 4 provides a technical description of the M-4, while Chapter 5 provides a synopsis of the M-4's operational career, and Chapter 6 discusses the VM-T variant of the M-4 for carrying rocket stages and the Buran space shuttle to the Baikonur Cosmodrome. Interestingly, the end of Chapter 6 covers a number of unrealized schemes for using the M-4 as a carrier aircraft, including a proposal to use the M-4 as a carrier aircraft for the M-17 spyplane and the 3M2 design studies for superheavy twin-fuselage aircraft designed to carry bulky space vehicle systems below an arched wing center section. The end of this book comprises a specification table for specific M-4 variants, an appendix listing all M-4s built, and another appendix recording accidents involving the M-4.

Although the aftershocks of Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year mean that Americans who visited Russia before the invasion will be bittersweet at the federal government's ban on US airlines flying to Russia, this book about the Soviet Union's first intercontinental jet bomber is something worth reading for American nationals who are fascinated by the strategic military prowess of the Soviet Union and later the Russian Federation during the Cold War and beyond.
