Professional stuff
I have been through several routers, the last one Linksys WRT1900AC, about the same price as MikroTik
However the difference is huge - with MikroTik you have full control of your network.
To the moment I have only configured wan, dhcp client leases, few port mappings and still learning it.
Probably using about 5% of its capabilities.
First impressions:
+ 10 network connections, first one is WAN, so effectively you have 9-port router. Old switch has been retired.
+ Simple and intuitive initial configuration - all important stuff (wan settings, wlan channels, wps) is on home page.
+ Solid case made of metal, feels quality product.
+ Strong wlan after some tuning of 5ghz channel.
+ winbox - windows desktop app to control the router if you don't like doing it through browser.
+ Completely silent. No fans, heat exchange through the metal casing.
+ Good online documentation.
- Annoyingly strong blue led on front panel. Fortunately in my setup all network connectors are facing backward so it is lightning back of the rack.
- 5ghz takes some experimenting to find correct settings. Fortunately MikroTik provides wifi snooper so you can simply get your existing router configuration and start from there.
Performance within local network is stable 1gbit transfer, wan speed is limited to 100mbit by provider, no issues there.
Would be interested to see performance under heavy vpn load where cheaper routers start failing.
