One good ride from start to end...
As with any tribute album, a lot depends on whether the initial concept is a good idea to begin with. For instance, there is a big-band tribute to The Grateful Dead which has excellent musicianship and production values but with the exception of one or two numbers, it's a misfire. They just couldn't rescue a bad idea.
"Might As Well...The Persuasions Sing The Grateful Dead" fares better. The Dead have deep roots, through their folk music background, in black gospel and spiritual music so a doo-wop approach isn't unwarranted. This works particularly well on such already soulful numbers like "Sugaree" and an especially heart-breaking "Black Muddy River". Additionally, their take on the title number is jubilant and playful, opening up a song which I never particularly cared for and helping me enjoy it more than any rendition The Dead ever performed.
On the down-side, "One More Saturday Night" is the biggest misfire on the album...this full-blown, rock-and-roll blowout just can't be shoe-horned into an a' capella arrangement.
Still, The Persuasions themselves are in fine voice with an especially rich and full baritone anchor and the overall production is just right. (Note: This isn't entirely an a' capella album as some drums and piano are added to a number or two but even when present, they never get in the way).
Though not essential, this is a fine album for Dead-heads, doo-wop fans or just those who appreciate good music. "Might As Well" indeed!Vollständige Rezension lesen...
