Good for everyday computing

I bought this to test a used Asus P5KC motherboard I recently purchased. The processor worked well under most conditions. It's good for everyday computing but for the serious user, I would recommend a quad core or an i7 or i5. Everything in my PC was working well but my Sound Blaster Audigy 2ZS was glitching on the audio feeding into my DAC. I turned off the 'Speed Step' features in the BIOS to keep the CPU running at full speed but that didn't stop the audio from glitching. I don't know if it's the fault of the sound card drivers, the motherboard, or the CPU. I might even blame the OS! Vista 32 bit is what I used to test the system. I had no glitching from my audio when I switched my system to a dual core AM2 based system with all the same components like my 1TB WD SATA II hard drive, Nvidia 7600gt PCI-E video card, 2gb OCZ PC6400 DDR2 RAM, and 400 watt power supply.

The audio would only glitch while multitasking, like running a virus scan or spy-ware scan while playing MP3 files from my hard drive using either Windows Media Player 11 or Media-Monkey. Something that just about any dual core processor should be able to handle with ease.

It left me with a slight bad taste for Intel...again. (I see why Intel switched over to the i7 platform. The on-die memory controller does a much better job at communicating between the RAM and the CPU)(that's something AMD has had in their processors ever since the first Athlon64!)

I could have done some more testing with a different OS and different drivers but I didn't. The results could be different.

For the average user doing usual things with their PC, it probably would be fine. It's still a good CPU, especially for the money I paid.

For now, I'm sticking with an AMD based system.

Really, the old "State-of-the-Art" is all you need

I started late, I admit. I wasn't sure that the computer would become the in every home device that TV had become and Radio before that. I have since learned that there will be very few exceptions to this rule
New tec that does what the old does and more, will ALWAYS be a sure bet!
OK
I bought my first computer just as it was no longer the top of the line, a P2 300mhz item with 64 mb or ram! Wow waht a cool thing that was.
Even then, it was frustrating to wait for a 3D design program to run or a scn to show up, etc...
So I began the never ending quest for "better"
I bypassed P3 and went the AMD way for a bit, until I bought the P4 3.2GHZ CPU, 1GB or DDR3200 and a 256mb 8x AGP card
WOW
SO big deal if that is unimpressive today, it was THE proceoosr, at least for 6 weeks after it was superceeded by the 3.4GHZ CPU
What I am getting at is that you are NEVER going to have THE best, at least not for long, because when you buy it, something better is already being produced.
So why bother?
Well there are benefits, to some extent
And that is where this duo-core CPU comes in.
It is not the fastes, but it IS fast, blindingly so.
It is even better if you realize that the CPU is not the whole of a fast and powerful system
You need Ram, a good MoBo, Vid card, etc...
If you are not into the most new, most dazzling video games and into the most power and processor hungry video editing and design programs
This computer will serve you for the next 10 years, probably, because who knows what the next leap will bring, instead of a steady and predictable advance.
Now you can get last season's heavy hitter that was over $250 for a song, and build that $3k on a budget, just because you waited a little longer.
Smart of you wasn't it?
Don't get bogged down into thinking that you need a Ferrari to go to the drug store and buy some gum.
I finally built a P3 system.
It has a good, old Vid card with 64mb of ram on it and plays dierectly to the TV, a tube TV.
It is used for movies and that's it
Sometimes old is better than good enough, especialy for the price
You want a great CPU for a screaming price?
Buy this one or one close to it
You won't be dissappointed

Great for OC'ing!

get yourself one of these with some nice cooling and an msi board easily stable @3ghz for years. I ran several stress tests and several reviews before attempting this. Runs all the games I throw at it quite nicely with a decent 9800GT nvidia graphics card and some dual channel RAM. Very nice CPU!Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Great product and recommended buy.

Great processor, very cheap and amazingly high performance (compared to other processors from the same price range) it operates in a very cool state and it performs very well in basic operations like surfing the web and doing some office work, overall this processor paired with a good amount of ram can do the work fast and cheap!Vollständige Rezension lesen...
