Just What An Insane Psychiatrist Would Order - LMAO

I think Jeff Buhler, the director, writer, and bit part actor of his film Insanitarium is a pure genius whose greatest moments as a director have yet to be seen. The film, although quite unlike other films such as One flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, was a complete and total enjoyment to watch. The premise of having mental patients all together in one room or in padded cells within an asylum is absolutely fascinating, not to mention the torture and experimentation that is actually highlighted in this film.

Jack (Jesse Metcalfe) is a very obsessive character who chooses to go socially crazy and act mentally derange so that he can enter the Middleton Psyche Institute in order to try and save his sister from what he thinks will eventually destroy her. A fascinating fact is that director Jeff Buhler plays one of the paramedics in the first part of the film when Jack gets taken away.

We are introduced to a whole plethora of characters including the maniacal Dr. Gianetti (Peter Stormare), who seems to be in total control of the institution, along with his assistant Vera Downing (Carla Galle), who is also discovered to be having a lurid affair with him later in the film. Doctor Gianetti creates and administers his new drug called Orpheum to a mental patient that was not locked behind maximum security and winds up biting Nurse Henderson. This in turn allows a mutated form of the drug to get passed around to the more docile patients and we soon have all the entire population of the institutional crazies turning into cannibalistic killers with the urge to rip your flesh apart and eat it. Sound like just another Zombie Film? I think not! This one takes the cake and am glad they finally got a zombie film right for once. The soundtrack is reminiscent of 28 Days yet Paul D'Amour does a great job.

We also have charge nurse Henderson (Molly Bryant) who rules and runs the psyche ward with an iron fist much like Nurse Ratchett in Cucko's Nest. The character Lily (Kiele Sanchez) plays another floor watcher who seems to pay a bit more attention to Jack and seems to relate to him much better in the institution than most. The disciplinarian floor guard Charles (Evan Park) does his job to keep things running smoothly around the mentally ill. Another female mental patient character Heather (Lisa Arturo) seems to be obsessively estranged about male attention and sex.

Another small role that happens to be a mental patient and psycho killer under the lock down of the solitary confinement glass room is Armin Shimmerman. Of course he's the one who played Quark on Star Trek:Deep Space Nine on a majority of the 173 episodes starting in '93. Armin plays a Hannibal Lecter wannabe who eventually escape and gets stabbed in the chin with a plastic knife.

Another interesting fact is that another Trekkie guy is in another acting role in this film and that is Christopher Shea. He's actually a good actor, and he spends all of his scenes on the same set. They probably only had him for a day, which was a role he took probably to get some exposure. Well, Christopher, you certainly made a great film presence when you got to tear that cats head clean off and started drinking its blood like a 7/11 Slurpie.

Main key moments include: slashing an X in your chest, having an arm torn off, knife to the chin, cleaver to the face, metal spike through the head/mouth, a fair amount of topless female nudity & a couple of cheesy one liners!

Bravo 5/5 for pure entertainment valu
