A hard drive is a hard drive is a hard drive.

After computing (and repairing computers) for more than 20 years, my experience is that, basically, a hard drive is a hard drive, is a hard drive.

Having said that, the biggest difference I've found is in the speed (rpms). The faster the disks spin, the faster the access time, in general. However, I've also found that the slower it spins, the more likely it is to last longer before failing outright or showing signs of failure. Generally, dollar for dollar, the per gigabyte cost of (for example) a 40GB vs. 60GB vs. 80GB is less for the larger capacity drives.

I bought this 40GB drive for the low price.

The newer, SATA, interface is better than the old IDE/ATA. With SATA, you're not likely to have pins damaged during cable connection, and the cables are easier to route. Seems SATA drives are larger and less expensive per GB, too.

I bought this drive for durability because one of my used laptops (purchased 4 on eBay recently) needed an IDE/ATA (PATA) drive and will be put to use for applications that don't need the performance benefit of a faster drive. I'm hoping the slower spin speed will result in better longevity.

However, for the 2nd drive bay modules on the laptops, I've purchased SATA modules and SATA drives with larger capacity for about the same price, and have them as data backup locations. (I swap in the CD/DVD drives of various flavors as needed.)

One exception is Hitachi brand. I've read they have had a widespread problem with surface issues on the platters. But I installed an external USB 160GB Hitachi for my neighbor several years ago and it's working fine. Didn't stop me from buying this one. Go figure.

Since this is a used drive, there's no way to evaluate/rate it for longevity because there's no way of knowing how many hours it's been operating prior to purchase and how it's been handled, especially during shipping.

A 40 gb hard drive for a great price.

I bought this hard drive as a direct replacement for the one in my Gateway PC that crashed. Although the date of manufacture was 5 years ago, it appeared and performed as new. In hindsight, I would have bought a larger capacity drive. The value for money was outstanding.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Never received the disk in time

I bought it because I need it as spare parts to retrieve data from a hard disk

I strongly disagree with the purchase and very upset because it took too long to reach the disc.
And I have not received the attention which they apply.

The only good thing is that the purchase is equal to l drive I need.
