78XL Are Discontinuedd, Existing Stock is Too Old Now

XL cartridges have not been made for some years now. Unfortunately with age ink can leak under the protective tape causing the colors to mix, ruining the cartridge.

I recently bought three 78XL cartridges new in the box with expiration dates 6-8 years ago from three different sellers. Every example had ink mixing. Rather than the needed cyan, magenta, and yellow colors I had a mixture of muddy browns and green. No amount of cleaning cycles would restore the colors properly.

While cartridges being beyond the warranty period is not fatal for the HP 78XL cartridges, it is probably that cartridges years beyond the warranty may have ink under tape or other defects that will make the cartridges unusable for the intended purpose.

It's a print cartridge.

This review system is a bit confusing - I purchased a new-in-box official HP 78XL after getting sick of flaky refills (and possibly the printer's "DRM" depending on the real reasons for "Check cartridge" messages). Despite a 2009 expiration date (as described for the unit ordered) I lucked out and the cartridge is running perfectly out of the box.

Only time will tell if it dries up before it's used up. However, it's nice to get some last life out of this horrible little printer before it finally goes into the bit-bucket.

Unfortunately it's hard to guess how items have been stored (position and temperature) and that probably makes the difference. I'm going to make a point of storing all my spare HP carts nozzles-down from now on (as they sit in the box when hanging on the shelf), as I suspect -some- of my issues with other carts has been from storing them on their sides, possibly allowing air to infiltrate further into the printhead than would occur with gravity keeping a protective amount of ink in place.

As far as "recommending this product" - I would certainly recommend a surplus official cartridge off eBay versus a reman. QC from the refillers is all over the map lately and at least the particular cartridges preferred by the OfficeJet v40 (78 / 78XL, 15) are quite finicky and delicate compared to the yet-older types that you really could refill forever.

Cheap but not of great quality due to being past expiration

The cost was low and prints many colors, but the red portions of the printout look a little brownish.

Great prices, but get the Expiration date!

Most of these cartridges offered on E-bay are expired, meaning that some evaporation of the ink inside the cartridge has occurred. Recently expired dates usually mean no problem, but carts that have dates 3 and 4 or even more years old, must be bought with caution. If you know how to refill, these carts can be a great value! It is even better if your seller can certify that they carts have been stored in cooler temps and not exposed to heat, such as in a store window, etc.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Bad gamble

Does not work. Hard to understand how a color crtg one year out of dat is apparently dried out. Time to look for a new printer.

New HP78XL Cartridge in Unopened Factory Packaging

New HP78XL Cartridge in Unopened Factory Packaging. I like these cartridges that have expired warranties because they're more economical. I try to limit them to 3 years expired or so. If the ink doesn't want to come out of one or two nozzles, a soak in some warm water plus a little spray glass cleaner usually does the trick.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

CARTRIDGE CAME TO LIFE...WITH A LITTLE WORK.

Product was as expected. Was OK, value wise, when considering that you have to work a bit and spend time soaking/priming the cartridge to getting it to come to life again. (It isn't that way when received due to it being an expired cartridge...).

I DID finally get all the colors working, however. So I'd recommend it -- relative to getting ripped off by HP for one and paying $45 plus bucks otherwise!

Only new ones work well.

Make absolutely sure that the cartridge is newly manufactured and still fresh and under warranty. The older ones and re-manufactured ones seldom work.

Ink was dried up

ink was all dried up. NO matter how much cleaning or soaking the cartridge, it wouldn't print colors correctly

Expired Cartridges Rarely Work.

Unfortunately expired HP cartridges rarely work. Soaking in hot water or rubbing alcohol did nothing to restore use. It was worth it to me to try once since this cartridge has been discontinued.
