Good but not as good as Scotland Street and Scones?
Written with McCall Smith's wonderful, dry, witty and intelligent humour, this is the 2nd book in the series. The first, '44 Scotland Street', was delightfully entertaining, and 'The Lightness of Scones' equally so. Espresso is perhaps a little less enthralling but a very good read nonetheless. Six-year-old Bertie is on top form with his precociousness and set to rule the world - or become a successor to Machiavelli if his ghastly mother pushes him any further! If you consider yourself a Tiger Mother or just drag your offspring to every possible 'enriching' activity, you might not find this book remotely funny.
This series has the affectionate social observation of Jane Austen, and the sharp character analysis of the Writer's legal mind. Personally, this series has provided by favourite books of recent times. I recommend them without reservation to anyone who enjoys intelligent, well-written prose that is light but not simplistic.Vollständige Rezension lesen
