U.S. released Dark Light not recommended for older fans

Ville Valo and fellow Finnish countrymen have followed up with their debut album Dark Light. Produced and recorded in Los Angeles this album is a huge departure from the melodic, love lost feel that had gotten me into this band back in 2002 when they were recording in Finland.

Valo's lyrics seem forced and very manic as the verses switch between happiness and being melancholy. I suppose hanging out in the Rainbow Room with your favorite rockstars versus recording under financial and emotional stress in Fimland had a lot to do with the way this album sounded. Originally, supposed to be titled after a track on the album "In The Nightside Of Eden", Valo had decided to go with a more low key title because they wanted no "satanic" depictions for their first U.S. released album on Warner Brothers. Again here is where you can see that the sound of this record is not what devoted HIM fans are used to because they're playing what the American audience wants to hear. Unfortunately, that's because in the states is where they make their money.

My recommendation is to purchase a few songs off iTunes to start off with. If you can dig the new transition the band has taken then I'd say by the album in entirety. Otherwise I wouldn't waste my $15 for a cd that will collect dust.

Dark Light - Solid from beginning to End

Record companies are complaining about CD sales dropping. Yeah, file sharing may have something to do with it, but how about people don't want to pay 12.00 for two decent songs. That's what you get with most CD's today. Not with this CD though. This album is solid from beginning to end. HIM's tracks are all good on this one. The heavy songs are great. Great guitar work but you can also enjoy the lyrics. The slow songs such as Dark Light is also a powerful song. Hoping Ville and the gang will get to the USA this summer. HIM's Love (Metal) Letter to America

HIM refer to their brand of stellar musicianship as Love Metal. It is phenomenally popular in Europe, where they headline huge rock festivals and adorn magazine covers galore. Americans could find imports on EBay but remained largely unaware of the band's existence. Dark Light, HIM's first release on Sire/Warner Bros. Records, is poised to shatter that blissful ignorance.

Many HIM fans say this album is smoother than past releases; more poppish. There's always been an element of melodic pathos in their music, but in the past it was swept aside by jagged guitar riffs and aggressive production. On Dark Light, the songs are polished to an obsidian sheen while maintaining a cutting edge.

The first single, "Wings of a Butterfly," exemplifies the blend of intricate melody and powerful drama for which HIM is known, sweetened up a bit for first-time American listeners. After hearing its soothing, sinister refrain, one finds it impossible to think of anything but the dulcet tones of Ville Valo "Killing Loneliness." "Under the Rose" is a fast-paced romp through the HIM repertoire of slamming drums, purposeful bass, and delicious guitar work. "The Face of God" shows off Valo's lyrical chops as the divine intertwines with unabated desire in a passionate, hallucinogenic fog. "Vampire Heart" is more in the same vein; anthemic choruses, thought-provoking imagery and unforgettable tunes pervade every millimeter of this CD.

Each member is indispensable. Powerful drummer Gas Lipstick and "Bad Bad Mige" Amour provide the majestic metallic pedestal upon which all the gorgeous drama is constructed. Irresistible riffs by guitarist Linde adds just the right amount of spice to this user-friendly album. Keyboardist Burton infuses classical splendor with gothic ear candy; sophistication without inaccessibility. The role of visual centerpiece, lyricist and press lightning rod goes to Ville Valo, whose slender frame belies a deep and compelling clarion of a voice.

As a HIM fan living in America, I am very pleased with Dark Light. It is well-written and consistent, as HIM are consummate craftsmen with a string of excellent albums to their credit. Great CD

This CD titled Dark Light by HIM is one of their greatest contribution to foreign rock. Not only does it sound good but its songs wrap around you yo give you a great look at their music. It includes their latest songs such as Wings of a Butterfly and Killing Lonliness among others. This CD pumped me up every time I listened to it and im sure it will do the same to you if not more. Dark Light by H.I.M. (Goth Rock) (CD, Sep-2005, Sire)

The cd came a day before it was due to arrive, but it had a crack in the case. That was not told in the description. Although the case was cracked the cd seems to work fine. Kickass CD

Fourth time buying this CD, First time got lost, second time broke, thrid time was too beat up and wouldn't play anymore. What's this saying? I'm a hardcore HIM fan and would buy the CD's so many times over. 10/10 Listen to Killing Loneliness, it's worth buying :DVollständige Rezension lesen...

I can't stop playing it!

This HIM's album is powerful from the very first note. Every single track is just amazing. If you love Gothic Rock, this is the album you're looking for.

Best HIM Album yet!

I know HIM since their first published song "Wicked Game" and bought every album from them ever since. They just keep getting better and better. I think this is the best album they put out so far. I really love the lyrics on this album! They grow up I guess :-)
