A classic, an absolute steal at today's prices.

This is, in 2013, to camera fans what a 1998 BMW 528i is to Beemer fans. Both Beemers deliver what you'd expect for what are designed to be high end pieces of gear, and are unmatchably more enjoyable to use than, say, a 1998 Hyundai. You can buy a "2013 Hyundai" compact camera for the same money as the Canon G3 today. You need to ask yourself though: what offers better value?

The equivalent model today is the Canon G15, which, 12 iterations later than this venerable ancestor of the line, is undoubtedly an excellent bit of kit. But the G15 will set you back ~$450. You can get a G3 for $60 - or $80 on ebay if you really must have one now.

Fact is, the G3 sports features that are still considered high end today: a sun bright f2.0 to 3.0 lens with a reasonably zoom range, a swivel LCD, full control over aperture, shutter speed, a full manual mode, a relatively large by compact standards 1/1.7" sensor and a solid body build that makes it obvious where a large chunk of the G3's original $799 rrp went in 2002! Granted, its 3.8 megapixel pictures are laughable if you're counting dots by today's standards, but better 3.8 quality megapixels - which is what the G3 delivers - than the 15 million noisy mushed up ones, which are sadly all to prevalent on the miniscule budget sensors on digicams in the same price range as a G3 today. And don't forget that 3.8 million MPs are way more than any happy snapper really needs for decent 8 x 10 prints.

OK, it's not all roses of course. This camera is 11 years old as of 2013, after all, and buying second hand, it's critical to look for a well cared for copy. Its postage stamp size LCD will drive you bonkers compared to today's almost 6 x 4 print size screens (:)). And high ISO shots on the G3 suffer the limitations of noise reduction technology from 2002, although with that bright lens, you can hopefully avoid high ISO shots all the times that it matters.

But dwelling on the bad stuff due to its vintage is like saying you'd prefer the 2013 Hyundai over the '98 Beemer. It's a matter of choice and taste of course, and you're free to go where you want your car to take you, but I know what horn I'd prefer to toot!Vollständige Rezension lesen...

A solid workhorse well preserved and still fully capable of high quality.

This camera must initially be seen in light of its age, and feature set. The version I bought is in perfect shape, complete with all three extended manuals. The period of manufacture, around 2002 means that 4 megapixels is the then state of the art, limited resolution compared to present technological levels. I bought the camera for eBay photographs and for casual uses. I most like the high constructional quality and feature set. The original robust build quality means that the appearance is still high quality, and the feature set fully useable.

The camera has extreme closeup MACRO capability and many timed functions: all the software functions are fully compatible with my late model Mac Laptop.

The price, around $50.00 dollars, for the nearly professional capabilities of this camera, represents a true bargain.

Later when I've fully mastered the camera I'll move on to a more contemporary SLR design. But for now, this camera has ideally served my immediate purpose very well indeedVollständige Rezension lesen...

Cheap and excellent!

Currently on eBay can be bought cheap. Sometimes less than 30.00; and in very good condition. The Canon G3 when it came out, after 2005 was rated a best buy at about 500 dollars. It has a large number of modes, settings, and options. Some call them whistles and bells. lol Suggestion: on ads, look for clear photos which show very little wear. I have bought several off eBay, following my own suggestion. Several because they are such excellent value; and they can be bought so cheap off eBay. All work perfectly! Great Canon F2.0 zoom lens. 4.0 MP seems sufficient - due to excellent sensor and lens quality. MP is only a part of it. Screen is small: 1 1/8 inch - but sharp and clear; and swings out and can be set in many positions. Swivels many different positions. I give it 5 stars! Produces excellent photos. Canon Power Shot G3

Exactly what I needed at the price I intended to pay

Bought this camera to replace my G3, my 1st digital camera, lost to water damage when launching canoe & wife in Maine (1st time in 65 years for first & first for second--yes, we tipped!). This G3 will be kept in trunk of car for emergency use, so I don't risk my new Canon Rebel T2i. As a unexpected bonus I got a good hiking bag (since given to my hiking son) and a polarizing filter just right size and needed for my new telephoto zoom for my Rebel. This replacement G3 is not quite as clean as my old one but is quite adequate and works well. I wanted to stay with G3 because they are MIGHTY COMPLICATED, and I had learned of digital cameras and of digital computer massage starting with this make & model. Canon Powershot G3 digital camera makes me look like a professional!!!

I had this same camera for about 4 years until it recently got sick and passed away. I replaced the camera with the exact same model, partly because I still don't know all the ins and outs of the camera and mainly because I didn't have to learn the features of a new camera. Good value once memory card was separately purchased.

I was supprised that the camera did not come with a memory card. The camera was unuseable until I purchased and installed my own card. Otherwise it is a good value.
