Compact low light superstar is easy to use

I was looking for something about $300 used, and I couldn't afford lenses and such. I've had quite a few cameras, and here are my priorities:
1. Fast lens, good noise processor, relatively large sensor, anti-shake= good available light and flash performance under difficult conditions
2. Wide to low-telephoto range (what is most often used except for sports).
3. Logical, easy to use controls, not buried-in-the-menu
4. Easy for big hands to hold and control
5. Megapixels don't matter--I'm not blowing up to poster size, and greater megapixels reduce low light performance
6. Responsive (not slow) performance
7. Relatively sturdy (more metal than plastic), although dust and water proofing not required
8. Everything I need, except for a more powerful external flash, is built in, to reduce the amount of stuff to carry around
9. Better-than-snapshot photos, more like film performance

I've been disappointed in the past in the above areas with other models. There have been some compromises--after all, it's a $500 camera in a smaller format. It's surprising the amount of control that you do have. But it appears that Canon deliberately crippled the camera's interfacing with Speedlites--almost no camera control/display over external Canon flashes. Otherwise, this camera is trampling on low end digital mirrorless territory.

The pop up flash is surprisingly good--most of the time it is all you have to have, although you don't have much control, and fill flash is problematic. Nissin has an I40C flash that is nearly ideal, unless you need a master. It also works well as a slave to my 550ex. The camera is not compatible with Canon's 600ex series radio flash system, just the 550ex series IR controls, so Canon's IR controller works best if you need a master flash on the camera. The Canon Speedlites are either too limiting or way too heavy to shoe mount. The big Speedlites work fine in a frame with a cord, but now you've got all this junk to carry...

I know I'm focussing a lot on Speedlites here, but that's because the camera's interface with them is the biggest weakness in the camera. Yeah, I know there's a certain Sony that is similar and technically takes photos a little bit better, but I hate its control system, its slower lens, and the extra $100 in cost. Or you could step up to one of the compact full-size (or nearly full size) sensor camera, but they are a LOT heavier and a bigger investment (plus, it's back to multiple lenses, as the kit lenses usually stink).

This camera is almost Leica-like is some ways. If you are willing to take a few minor trade-offs (some control and technical performance) for affordability, portability, and ease of use, it's a winner. After all, the camera that gets used the most is the one that is with you...

The camera I received would almost pass as new, except for the missing charger and manual. BTW, I hate the el-cheapo strap that Canon puts on it (no quick disconnect, so it gets in the way when you mount the camera).

I have not dwelt on the "optical" viewfinder, because the display is good enough most of the time. (It's similar to the viewfinder on a 35mm rangefinder camera).

Canon G16 impression

Used this device for few months, is a premium quality photo camera. Can be used very well in low light areas due to BSI sensor, also as very fast, I used it to take multiple shots to sportive competitions of my son, as no movement element, will be no deterioration if used like this. A DSLR will die fast if used like that constantly.
About photo quality, good at it should, optics are well done, easy to use. Video recordings are very good, crisp clear.

Excellent DSLR substitute in a small package!

I am a professional photographer, but there are times I just don't want to have to carry a full-size DSLR, especially when traveling with the family. This camera fills that void perfectly! While the image quality is not on par with my DSLRs, it is far superior to any other point-and-shoot camera I have ever seen. It has the ability to shoot RAW, has a full-function hot shoe for flash use, and the optical viewfinder is very helpful on bright sunny days when the main LCD viewing screen just can't compete with the bright sun. The video quality is excellent, as well.

This camera will never take the place of my DSLRs, but is a great companion to them.

excellent point and shoot camera and probably the best value for mony for this quality

This 2013 model and therefore have lower price tag. Nevertheless, the quality of images are high thanks to a large sensor that is sensitive even in low light conditions.

I looked for camera that will be small and easy to carry and with decent quality, beyond what a phone can generate. This camera exceeded my expectations.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

It suffices

Not as good as the G15; can't improve upon perfection. It suffices with lots of good features. But I'll be danged if I can get the shoulder strap into the side loops that holds it in place.

Canon G16

I've been looking for a small camera for quite a while. I looked at all of the new Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Panasonic and all other 2017 models and nothing really grabbed my attention. I then looked at this superb condition older G16. Even though it is a bit larger and heavier than the new cameras, its handling is superb compared to the others. Although not completely pocketable I think this feature out weighs alot of the other fancy features and smaller sizes. I really wanted to get a new Sony RX100, but after I picked it up I put it down and it left my mind. Yes, the GX7 mark II is ok, but still does not handle like the G16. I wish Canon would develop a G17 with a 1" sensor and Digic 7 processor. Now that would be the ticket. My $0 .02......Vollständige Rezension lesen...

THE VERY BEST POINT AND SHOOT CAMERA..........

I have owned a Canon PowerShot G15 for several years and I love, love it. When it was time for a new camera, I bought the Canon PowerShot G16. It is very easy to use, it takes great pictures with amazing clarity and color and it is lightweight and easy to carry in my purse. I recommend a Canon PowerShot for anyone who wants great pictures -- easily.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Enjoyed the purchase, would recommend

Works very well for being such a small camera. Its surprising that it can work as well as it does. It does the job of being a point and shoot well. Its lens is sharp, lets in a lot of light and is quite responsive. Battery life is good but not great, especially if you turn the sensitivity up. Then again... thats why you can buy extra batteries for it right?

Works best for new photographers or someone that wants straight forward camera. You can adjust the brightness of your photos with one knob and let the camera stay in automatic. Simple enough an untrained 8 year old can figure it out, yet gives you the option to be technical in manual if you really want to.

The view finder is small, and i'm not really sure why its there. This is not a view camera or rangefinder. If you ignore it, you're not missing much.

Preformance? Its there, its got what matters. It'll satisfy facebookers, twitter and instragram savy individuals and anyone that just wants to take photos. Its not super high end, you wont roll out some epic 2ft by 3 foot print, it just doesn't have the resolution of a full frame camera. Even with that in mind, it will make some nice 8x10's to hang on the wall. Is it professional? Nope, but it'll give some cameras a real run for their money. For the cost to performance its close enough that you should seriously consider it.

Pick up a good quality memory card, something that actually has a warranty on it. That way it wont fail on you after 30 photos. You'll find yourself playing around with the various settings and functions, and you'll be glad you picked it up. Memories are worth saving right? Thats why you're looking at a camera to begin with. Heck if you start going nuts with it, pick up a couple extra cards. Just remember to never 100% fill them up. You'll risk deleting some or losing them all if the card fails cause you overfill it.

The Canon G16 well exceeds my expectations for the next step up in camera.

Need a camera? Cameras from the 1930s Kodak autographic folding camera to today’s Canon G16 causes me to compares the G16 with a Brownie box , Yashika TLR, Argus C3, Contax, Pentax and several other fine cameras. The G16 is by far the most superior picture taking equipment.
• This Canon G16 is well regarded by the reviewers and with the advances incorporated in the design is a good fit for my new camera.
• Excellent ISO ratings (Film Speed) for difficult lighting;
• Often used controls are located on or near the fingers on the camera outside;
• Adequate sized screen and CMOS image area;
• Includes wireless connection
• Advanced features such as smile detection, eyelid pause;
• Designed to cope with camera movement in spectacular fashion;
The list of reasons to choose the G16 is long and the price difference from the eBay vendor is the “Icing on the cake” for my wallet.
Clearly a suitable camera for the serious amateur or budding professional.

Superior performance and Quality. I don't intend to upgrade any longer.

I could never say enough good things about this camera. It was only produced for a short period of time. That Canon factory in which it was made suffered an earthquake, and they never brought it back again.
Mine was stolen in Texas last summer, and I had a heck of a time finding another one. I paid much. more for a refurbished one, than I paid for the original when it was new. Never the less, it is my go to camera in any and all situations. I rarely use my DSLR anymore unless I want a longer reach telephoto. Fantastic image quality. i don't see any reason why I would need for a 20 megapixel camera, when one like this is so good. Super quality.
