A great Canon crop sensor DSLR

A great Canon crop sensor DSLR. This camera has great image quality, handles well, and can shoot up to 8fps, if you need to. It’s a bit on the large side, but it’s well made and weather sealed, so it will stand up to rigorous use. It only has one memory card slot, and takes the older Compact Flash (CF) format cards. So, you’ll likely need a card reader to transfer pics to your computer for processing and backup. 18mp resolution is fine for most uses, but since there’s far higher resolution cameras on the market, the Canon EOS 7D is a real bargain. Aim for one with under 50k shutter count (shutter life is 150,000), and a clean body should be available for about $250. Vollständige Rezension lesen...

A used 7D is a great value in 2022

The Canon 7D was one of the best sports and wildlife cameras in the world when it was released in 2009 for $1700. Buying this camera for $160 shipped with 42K shutter actuations on it feels like a steal. It was the Sony A9 of its day.

Fast-forward to 2022, and the 7D feels distinctly more rugged than any camera I have ever owned (Canon 60D, Canon 6D, Sony Sony a77, Sony a77ii, Sony a99ii, Sony a7r, Sony a7riii, Sony a7c, Sony a6000 and Nikon d40) and distinctly heavier as well. The camera is legendary for being the most weather-sealed non-flagship camera of its day, and it still screams durability. Topping out at 8 shots per-second, it feels as fast as my Sony a77 and a99 bodies were even if it technically is slightly slower. Maybe it is due to not having any lag time for when you put the camera up to your eye and shoot, not sure.

This is my first camera that uses Compact Flash cards, and I have to admit the 7D writes files very fast because of it. The dual processors make it feel like a Corvette compared to my old 60D's Malibu. The AF system was great for its day, and it still can compete with much more expensive bodies in the hands of a professional. The image quality is very similar to my old 60D, which it shares an 18mp sensor with, and it also has comparable battery life (read: very good).

Even with all of my experience shooting with different bodies, the 7D feels even more complex than my a99ii did. While the 60D was the dumbed-down version of the 7D, and I knew this, it is still a much more sophisticated and better-handling body.

Here’s the very few things I don’t like

I purchased this 7D from eBay to upgrade from my older 7D (Minolta Maxxum 7D). It’s a great camera, as reviews on eBay and around the internet will say. I love mine, takes great photos and videos, but I will take a different approach with my review and share what I don’t like. It’s not a long list.
I may have been spoiled by the Minolta 7D with all the buttons, switches and knobs that made anything and everything quickly accessible, on the Canon I don’t like going into menus to do some things. Exposure bracketing is one, on the Minolta it was just 2 clicks on the switch on top to take multiple, successive photos of different exposures. On the Canon i have to go into a menu, twice, once to set exposure bracketing, then to set the drive mode.
Live view focusing doesn’t really work well for me, hunts a lot, sometimes decides it can’t focus. Could be my copy. I end up just manually focusing if I’m in Live view.
I wish the options on the top knob were spaced out more. It just looks weird that all the shooting modes are scrunched together and half the knob is blank.
Even though the top LCD screen is so 1987 (EOS 620, your legacy lives on) I’ve come to appreciate it and leave the back LCD off. (Konica Minolta and early Sony DSLRs that I used to use only had the back screen, no top LCD)
That’s it, short list. There’s just a lot to like about this camera, even if the technology is 10 years old, and not a lot to dislike. it’s a fun tool to use.

I'm a pro photographer and have 2 of these.

The 'Q' button allows you to get to all of the settings you always use quickly and easily, which is monumentally convenient when your light changes, as it always does. Great intuitive focusing, large files, too much to list. The lens has great glass and has the perfect focal length for my needs, I almost never switch lenses. Vibrating sensor shakes dust off so it doesn't pollute your pictures. Image stabilization on the lens, since I shoot often in lower light. It's a very tough camera, I have dropped mine so many times it is a miracle it still works! I love my canon 7D, that's why I bought another. I must have taken at least 100,000 pics with at and it only has 1 dead pixel. If I could, I would send you to my website, where most of the photos were taken with this camera. This camera is like a part of my body.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

May Be The Finest Camera I Have Ever Owned

This is a great camera! High resolution with the same simple features of the most amateur of Canon DSLRs, but with many advanced features as well. Very well built with a solid feel in operation that I haven’t found in most Canons, especially in Rebel models. Continues the feel first experienced in my 20D, but with 18 megapixel sharpness, and expected shutter life of 150,000 actuations. Wonderful camera, simple to use, but with advanced features to use as you progress as a photographer. Now available on eBay in great condition at a very reasonable price, it is highly recommended. Look for one that has good appearance and low shutter count, and don’t look back!

EOS 7D 18.0 MP Great backup camera.

Its built like a tank, pro grade Magnesium frame and body, not plastic, APC size sensor not a full frame. Has live view and Video capability, ISO range is extended to 12800 and shoots at 8 frames per sec. Uses the new Canon menu/information format and has the 3 inch display too. Accepts the latest Canon EF style lenses. Came with a battery grip containing 2 batteries.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Excellent camera for the price for Canon users

I am upgrading from a Canon Rebel XT and find the 7D a lightyear ahead of the Rebel. Having the features and a comfortable size makes it easier to use the camera in long dirations.

I was debating between the 5D 7D, and decided on the 7D so I didn't need to buy more lenses, and the extreme price didn't seem to warrant only for the sensor. I decided to have a 1.6 crop on my telephoto lenses, and the built-in IR flash triggering to be nice features that the 5D3 didn't have.

I decided to use the 2000 price difference to save for more lenses, which can use on any Camera camera.

For things I don't like:
1) I got the battery grip for this camera, and find it too heavy during traditional use..
2) I do not like the 22MB+ pictures. I find them too large for storage overtime. I tried the small and medium RAW files, but they do not include all the RAW data such as noise and sharpness, just exposure.
3) Canon also claimed that you could configure all the buttons, but only all of them. And for the buttons you could, only specific functions.

But overall, the 7D has more positive features then negative. I only am listing them for people who might be concerned of the negative features.

Great cropped sensor DSLR - not for beginners but PERFECT for amatuers who understand f-stops, iso, cropped sensors and camera settings.

this is a great, pro-sumer level ASP-C camera. I'm a photographer and helped my entry-level though enthusiastic buddy buy this, I also trained him in how to use it over the course of a few fun lessons. it was a big success - we were specifically looking for a cropped sensor to throw on top of a big zoom lens for that extra punch (+zoom) bc he is a birder.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Excellent Camera - Love all the Features!

I love this camera! I bought it to replace one I already had, but that I had broken. I'm a novice SLR user, and this camera is easy to use and figure out. It takes beautiful photos, and I've been a Canon girl for years! I have one lens I own, and a nice telephoto lens a friend has loaned me. This camera is perfect!Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Great Camera

So far this camera has lived up to all my expectations of it. My only problem is being able to learn all it's features. It has a great auto-focus functions and quick shutter release even in full auto function (focus) mode. The full HD video feature is amazing. The only drawbacks to this camera as I see it are it's weight and cost. The weight does helps in keeping a steady hand when shooting most subjects. Even the cost can be justified when you consider the 18.5 mega pixel image it takes and that it's the best in in it's class.Vollständige Rezension lesen...
