AMAZING LENS

Wow. Just wow! This lens is absolutely amazing. The crystal clear optics on this 85mm prime are unbelievable and the silky smooth bokeh created at or below 2.8 is addictive to look at (especially at f/1.2)! Seriously... I'll never forget the first picture I snapped with this lens and I could instantly tell the purchase was well worth it! The lens is large and heavy (no surprise there) so make sure you have the room to pack it and the desire to hold it on your camera body. The focus is slow so I wouldn't recommend it as an action-oriented lens, but it is PERFECT for portraits, group photos, weddings, functions, or anything like this. You'll also need to stay about 3.5 feet or further away from your subject to focus and at 85mm, you'll need some working room to capture some shots (and even more room if you're working on a sensor smaller than full frame)... if you work in tighter spaces, you may want to look at the 50mm 1.2 by Canon as a solid alternative. This lens is definitely oriented towards a specialist; not a generalist, so if you really want phenomenal, blown out backgrounds for particular photographs, look no further than this lens. I highly recommend this lens.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Choice Lens

I rented this lens and immediately fell in love with it and knew I had to get one. Yes, it is heavy but I love the weight and it's nicely balanced on my 5D IV and to me it feels like driving a muscle car. You have that very large aperture that in bright sunlight you can stop motion at 1/8000 at ISO 100 or you can stop it down just a bit and really get such nice sharp images. Yes, AF is slow and I probably did not need it but there are maybe 2 out of 10 shots I take with it that I just keep going back to over and over as the drop-off when it works and the right settings gives it this illusion that I just can't get with my other lenses. Also, as I am leaning more toward pet photography and children the 85 is really a great focal length and I know it would be fantastic for baby and newborn shots with that extreme blur you can get. As Ferris Beuller said" t is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up". I did insist I find a used one and found one for 1100 and it's perfect. Dream Lense come true!

Love, love, love this lense. I have drooled over this lens for a decade, but couldn’t justify the price. Even, when I worked at a camera store during Canon’s annual bonus employee discount. I thought I’d scarcely use it, so I didn’t bother. I could not have been more wrong; I regret not purchasing it a decade ago, why did I wait so long (so, stupid). I’m a sucker for a big aperture, the depth of field is oh so sweetly shallow, and it perfectly fits my shooting style (if Canon still made lenses with apertures bigger than f/1.2, I’d own them all). This bad boy has replaced my 24-70 f/2.8 L’s illustrious position of being stored on my camera’s body. This lense was worth every penny and it has almost made me enough money to pay for itself. I love this lense, I totally get lost staring into its beautiful glass. If only, I could find more appropriate words for how amazing this lense is.

PRO: Everything.
CON: Nothing.

I could die happy now; lol.

Lens That Lives Up To The Hype!

I have finally gotten my hands on what has been called the holy grail of portrait lenses. This actually completes my "Holy Trinity" of Canon primes: 35L, 85L, 135L. To start, since I already had the lenses mentioned before, this lens did not blow me away, but really lived up to the expectations I had. It gives me more breathing room than the 135L, and gets in much closer than the 35L. The bokeh is exactly what I have read about: creamy, soft, dreamy, melted, etc.

Although it doesn't have weather sealing, it is built like a tank! The filter thread is metal, and since it extends out when focusing, it is a good thing if you happen to bump into something. It is very heavy, almost like the 70-200 f/2.8, but the shape of it makes it feel very nice in hand.

Many reviews on the web mention slow AF. One has to keep in mind that this is not a sports/action lens. It is a portrait lens, first and foremost! To achieve accurate focus at f/1.2, the lens has to perform deliberate, precise calculations. I took a picture of a small house fly sitting on a post. Only a thin ribbon, maybe millimeters wider than the fly were in focus.

Overall, I just LOVE the images this lens produces straight out of camera! Colors and contrast are simply fantastic. The bokeh really does have a 3D effect, and gives a very smooth transition from in-focus to out-of-focus. It is sharp, almost edge-to-edge even at f/1.2, and that f/1.2 allows once to shoot in near darkness.

Truth Spoken Here

The lens is ONLY ideal when shooting portraits shoots. It is very challenging to shoot at 1.2 and get a tack sharp photo. You will definitely want to invest in a good tripod to help with these tight shots... The focus is also slow, but if all the stars line up just right, you can get some incredibly good shots. For me, I have found much greater results shooting this lens at 1.6, 1.8 for some great stuff. The bokeh in this lens will melt away everything when set at 1.2... Even with its donwsides, I would still purchase this lens again and simply reserve it more so the studio room.. A great piece, yeah, buy it, you won't regret it...Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Expensive but worth it.

I was not sure to move from 135mm f2L to 85mm 1.2L. Almost double price difference. But I'm happy I did that.

If you can manage distance than 135mm F2L has good value and have same sharpness and best bookeh. I'm not technical person, I just shoot pictures and compare the results.

If you are wedding photographer than this lens 85mm 1.2 L should be first choice.

If you are hobbiest than 135mm F2L is smart choice.

If you concern about external beauty like how it looks than 85mm F1.2L is your choice.

If money is not issue than 85mm F1.2 L is the best. Each penny worth it. The Result is amazing. Super sharp, great color and good bookeh.

This is best for wedding portrait pictures. And indoor family friends pictures. Very smooth, fast, soundless auto focus. Exterior is beautiful.

Overall I love the results.

Amazing Bokeh

This lens allows a very shallow depth of field creating an amazing bokeh, background blur. The background just seems to melt away, even while doing shots in a studio setting it is noticeable. When my wife saw some of the first shots I took with it she asked when I bought a new backdrop. For this reason and the sharp photos it produces it seems to be most widely used as a portrait lens. The lens weight and having a fixed focal length does not make it the most idea walk around lens. But when I take a bag along I make sure it is there just in case. The shots taken with the lens have proven to be very sharp and crisp, but the focusing speed is not very fast compared to Canon’s fastest auto focusing lenses. With it's f/1.2 capability it makes for a nice indoor sport lens, however the slower focus speed means taking more shots just in case. The lens utilizes an electronic manual focus override, when using the focus ring you use the focus motor to adjust focus. Which means the camera has to be on to focus the lens, no real big deal however during focusing the lens will extend out a little so to return it to the most compact position you have to make sure the camera is on. On a full frame camera there is noticeable vignetting at f/1.2 but is pretty much gone by f/2.0. The lens does pass along the distance information to the E-TTL II flash algorithm, a nice feature when a flash is needed. All in all I am very happy with the lens and it has outperformed my initial expectations. But keep in mind it is a fixed focal length lens and if you use it on a non-full frame camera body make sure you have room to step back to get everything you want in the shot. If this lens matches your needs you can’t go wrong. My equipment 5D Mark II, EF 85mm F1.2L II, EF 24-105mm f/4L, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L and a Speedlite 580EX. I am not a photographer by profession but by passion.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Canon-Leaving Film Users in the Lurch!

yummy, what a lens. canon have always taken a back seat to nikon in film cameras and lenses. sadly, that perception is undeserved. since their rangefinder days, canon have consistantly pushed the edge in lens design. who would have thought working film photographers would be paying $1,000.00 plus for the 50mm 0.95 rangefinder canon lens, in today's market. or the 50mm 1:1.2 - 2 incredible performers.

and so, how do you beat nikon's 85mm f1:1.4? simple with an 85mm f1:1.2. and what a lens it is! within those absolute laws of optics, this lens is a marvelous performer. i like it for portraiture and photo journalism, especially at the widest apertures. is it sharp edge to edge? no, but then you're not ever gonna notice that. what you will notice is the amazing available dark results this lens can pull off! it ain't small, though and you can forget any thoughts of balance when the camera's around your neck.

now for the bad news. this lens stands as a lasting rebuke to canon who have abandoned the fd mount and abandoned film cameras all together! it is amazing that canon was unable to learn the lesson from their rangefinder manufacturing days. those cameras are still used on a daily basis by working photographers all over the world. and, like their fd slrs, you don't abandon a successful photographic instrument.

another thing to consider- do you invest hard earned dollars in af lenses, knowing the life of that particular design is 7-10 years? meanwhile the mf lenses keep going on and on and on, 20, 34, 50 years and longer. not to mention the sloppy optical fittings in those lenses which will not stand the test of time and professional use. don't believe me? just look at the parts and repair lists of af lenses in ebay!

so, let's get back to the subject. this lens is a great hidden bargain. find one, buy it, get a ftbn, ae1, a1, f1, f1n, f1N camera body and experience 35mm joy!!
have at it, camera groovies!

Canon portrait lens

I am an amateur photographer at best. I have a older Canon rebel camera. Have invested in 2 lenses that are higher end to help my poor skills. This lens does an incredible job to provide professional looking portraits without trying. It is expensive but if you can afford it, I believe it can make a bad photographer look good and good photographer look great. Just my opinion.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Canon EF85mm f1.2L II - gorgeous unique protraiture

The Canon 85mm f1.2L II is unique prime lens one finds it hard to let go once laying on your hand. It's heavy but not excessive long. The focus speed is reasonably fast, better than I expected after I read from some reviews saying that it's very slow. It is excusable to focus slower than the Canon 85mm f1.8, since the lens composition inside the lens is way bigger and heavier. In shooting portrait, at f1.2 the subject stands out sharp in the mist of a nice blurred background, the contrast is sharp, and if the background has levels of depth, they are subtly well presented one layer over the other. The lens is very expensive and the function is practically for portraits only , due to its focal length and prossly used with the aperture wide open. It is worth it for every penny I have spent since the photo stands out of its kind, but it is a luxury to spend so much $$ for just its specialty. Well anything special costs more, just like seeing a specialist doctor usually costs a lot more than seeing a G.P. For anything less, I will go for the Canon 85mm f1.8, it has a more versatily due to its light size and faster focusing speed, hence a higher price to value ratio than the Canon 85mmf1.2L II. I own a 70-200mm f2.8L, a 100mm f2.8L macro IS, a sigma 300mm f2.8 EX, they all take gorgeous protrait pictures, the 85mm f1.2L still stands out the best!Vollständige Rezension lesen...
