Classic Affordable Overdrive Pedal

The main difference in a Tube Screamer and the Boss SD-1 is the type of clipping. SD-1 utilizes asymmetrical clipping, and a Tube Screamer uses symmetrical clipping. They both have a mid-hump as for as the EQ curve. You can use them both as boosts into other pedals or amps. As straight up overdrives, the Tube Screamer often sounds like a layer of dirty and a layer of clean, where as with the SD-1, you get the single layer of dirty because of the circuit's clipping type. Either are great. Some prefer one over the other.

I have both the TS and the Boss. Either work great with many configurations, and in some cases you might prefer one to the other with a particular setup. I have more than one tube amp, and I have a variety of pedals that I use on this one or that one.

Okay stock. Modded it gives a TS9 a run for its money.

The SD-1 has got to be one of the most underrated ODs on the market (second only to the Digitech Bad Monkey perhaps). At $35-$40 it is an absolute steal. Stock, the pedal dose suffer a few drawbacks (the reason for only giving it 4 stars). #1 is sounds a bit muffled, you know the olf cliche of a "blanket over the speaker"? That somewhat accurately describeds this pedal in stock form. As I understand it, if you are proficient with a soldering iron (which fortunately I am) this is pretty easily fixed by removing a capacitor which is the offending component in the tone circuit. #2 the bypass circuit allows a bit of bleed over from the gain circuit into your clean tone. I also understand that this varies a bit from pedal to pedal but it was precievable in mine. This too can be fixed with a relatively easy addition of a few readily avaliable components.

After doing a little research online and talking with my new favorite pedal modder, Mike from Modest Mike's Mods, I opted to have my SD-1 modded. Mike performed a mod developed by a friend of his that is essentially a mod of a mod. He performed his version of the Keeley 5 Star GE mod. The Keeley mod changes a number of components to improve the tone of the circuit, reduce noise and improve the bypass as well as adding a switch to select a Germanium Diode clipping stage. Additionaly, Mike installs a second switch that improves the bass response of the circuit (think BD-2 Phat mod). The added bass is subtle but noticable. With these mods, my humble little $35 pedal gives my modded TS9 and my Fulldrive 2 Mosfet a run for their money. I have a lot of dirt pedals and this is definately one of my favorites.

Give it a go. If you like it, great. For the money it is a steal. If you like it but want it to be a little better, call up Modest Mike. He will make it sing, and when it is all said and done, you will have a great pedal that is far less expensive then some of the "gold standards" out there.

Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with Modest Mike's Mods. I am just a guy that had him mod a few pedals and I think he does awesome work. He is my first choice in mod services now. I reconmmed him to anyone that wants to unlock the full potential of their stock pedals.

SD-1...Still the one

I've played just about every type of OD/Distortion circuit out there. For the money, and even regardless of price, the Boss SD-1 is still the pedal to own if you want to play lead guitar with some sustain and overdrive. As far as I know, they haven't changed the circuit in 35 years. And for about 50 clams, it's the OD to have if you're going to have one on your board. I've been playing strats for 45 years. I used to be a "purist", guitar-cable-amp. Now, this is my go-to pedal after many years of trying to coax and tweak a smooth overdrive tone out of the various tube amps I've owned and played. Want to just play and enjoy your tone? Buy a Boss SD-1 and stomp on it!Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Underrated? Yes. Classic? Yes. Fantastic value? Yes.

It’s a standard; it’s been around forever, like the DS-1. And it’s been around forever because it works. It sounds great and does its job well. You can buy all the boutique pedals in the world but they are almost all based on pedals that have been manufactured for years and this is one of them. Works fantastic as a boost, drop the drive down put the level up and wow, by its self it’s a classic distortion, run in front of your favorite distortion or drive channel in your amp for that extra edge, sustain and sensitivity while soloing. It’s just an all around reliable pedal that does exactly what it is designed to do, well. Can’t go wrong with an SD-1, it’s a classic. And remember it’s an overdrive, not a distortion. It will distort your signal; however it was designed to send your distortion into overdrive. And for those that cannot get a sound out that they are looking for, A: you don’t know what you’re looking for B: you don’t know how to use your amp, or your amp sucks tone (not the pedal) C: you thought it was something that it is not, like a distortion pedal.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Great value

I've been playing electric guitar for around seven years and am kind of a tone snob. I use this pedal to boost a fuzz pedal and it works great; it helps to fill in some of the mids on my fender amp. The od tones aren't too shabby either. This pedal is also cheap (about 1/2 the price of a tube screamer which is essentially the same pedal), and can't really be beat if you're on a budget.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Exceptional product!

Is this product good value for money?
DOUBTLESSLY SO!

Was it easy to change the pedal by soldering etc?
It was a little tricky at times but if you've ever soldered successfully in your life before then this is completely possible. Above all, the instructions for doing it were really good.

Does this actually change the sound of a stock SD-1 and how much different is the sound?
This customization changed the sound of the stock pedal into a louder, stronger and very different pedal. I own two and changed one of them. I feel like I have two completely different OD pedals.

Thank you for making these kits and for making it so easy to install them!

After our mod, this pedal rocks!

A very good pedal made even better by the folks at Modest Mike's Mods.
Check out listing #320743453213. We offer two SD-1 mods!

TS-808 Plus Mod:
We put in a RC4558P opamp (or JRC4558D if you prefer), but also an IC Socket that allows you to easily try different chips for different sounds. Our hand-picked parts for resistor and capacitor changes are metal film. This helps to eliminate hiss or background noises. We top it off by replacing your LED with an ultra-bright clear/blue LED. It is clear when your pedal is off, a nice noticeable blue when on. This led is great for a dimly lit stage, but did you know...a bright led is wonderful to have when you are playing outdoors in the daylight?
This is a TS-808 mod, but the clipping is left as asymmetrical. This type of distortion is more of a meaner, rock sound than the symmetrical clipping on the common tube screamer. Your SD-1 will not sound like another tube screamer clone!
After this mod, our customers have said “It sounds fuller, more like a Marshall amp sound.” They also noticed the highs are more controlled now. “Even at full tone, it’s not screeching anymore!” When you are playing live and things get loud and serious, this pedal will push your guitar with some clarity. Go ahead, push it! That’s when it sounds its best. Now your lead solos don’t sound like mush in the background. Instead your sound will maintain its body and cut right through the loudest of music.

SD-1 Hi-Fi 5 Star GE Mod:
Burrows Electronics has given us permission to market this wonderful mod. *Be sure and check out their video at the bottom of the listing.
Take Your SD-1 To The Next Level!
This is actually a mod of a mod. We take the Keeley 5 Star Ge Mod and crank it up a couple of notches. We do this my making the mod more Hi-Fi, improving the bypass circuit to eliminate tone bleed through, adding a bass boost switch, and fixing the "blanket over the speaker" problem this pedal has. Here is a list of what this mod offers:
1) Double the amount of distortion.
2) Two way gain switch that allows you to select between the warmer and more gain heavy Germanium mode and the LED mode which gives a volume boost, more clean headroom, and an overall thicker tone.
3) Improved bypass circuit for purer tone when the pedal is off.
4) Improved fidelity and clarity
5) Increased presence
6) Bass boost switch

If you own one, send it in for a tune-up. Or just get one from us. We have a few in stock already modified.

Keep rockin!

Really good Overdrive

It would be a 5 star but I had a grounding or shorting out issue that I had to fix with the one I bought. The main board was loose in the casing causing it to go out because it was touching the metal case or shorting out so i folded some paper to insulate the board from the case. Problem fixed for very cheap. It went from horrible sounding piece of junk that hardly worked to awesome overdrive pedal that in some situations could give an old school slight crunch. Tone knob is actually usable never gets harsh like some od pedals. Sounds nice I recommend even if you own a Ibanez TS. I am guitar player that has bought and sold many pedals and equipment and sometimes regret it. I reccomend this you won't be disappointed.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Misnomer Can Be Misleading, It's Tone Won't Disappoint

If you're looking for magic in a box, something that will transform you into the next great Guitar GOD, buy a lamp and start rubbing. But this baby can give you that screaming tone you've been hearing in your head but couldn't make come out of your amp's speakers. Although really an over drive unit (It says so on the unit itself)and not a distortion pedal as Boss's Metal Zone, it can add sustain and sounds you can't get ordinarily. I like it's straight forward design and classic Boss durability. Plug it in your chain of effects and turn a knob, all 3 of them if you wish. Even your lead singer can do that!!! It's classic weaponry for you 60's assault wanna be's.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

It is lightweight, only 3 knobs, & is great

Works super with vintage OD-1 which I had since the '80's !!! Works well by itself as well!! Tone control is key: knocks out much of mid range "squawk, " if one can exp. & tweak the other 2 knobs on it. Two OD's in series can be a little too much for some to handle; turn down the DRIVE's a little more. It has the sound I'm looking for, as opposed to actual distortion -- too heavy & saturated, SD-1 has that bite that I like!! (looking for a setting for the mid-range cut; I will find it soon!) Love it...Vollständige Rezension lesen...
