2009 CPU still rockn' in 2017

I have this CPU as a final upgrade to my old system. I used to have an Athlon 64 x2 5200+, then upgraded to a Phenom x4 9850 BE, and now the Phenom ii x4 940 BE. I could get a hexacore phenom to upgrade further, but they are not cost effective.

The rest of my system is an ASRock A780 Full Displayport Motherboard, 8GB (4x2GB) Kingston DDR2@ 800MHz, and an EVGA GeForce GTX 1050ti SC.

I have the Phenom ii x4 940 Overclocked to 3.3GHz from 3.0GHz because that's all my CPU cooler, a CoolerMaster Hyper TX3 can handle. It gets up to 61*C on a full load and AMD states that 62*C is the max Temp for the CPU. However I have got it to run stable at 3.7GHz but it gets too hot with my current cooler to run it at that speed on full load.

The combo of the AMD Phenom ii x4 940 and GTX 1050ti is great, I have had only one game where the CPU bottlenecked the GPU (Ashes of Singularity), but all other games I have run there is no bottleneck (this includes, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Witcher 3, Yooka-Laylee, Rocket League, Firewatch, Hearthstone, No Mans Sky, Fallout 4). All games (except A.O.S.) run at 1080p at max settings at 42FPS or better, and Near Max settings at 54+FPS. High Settings or lower is 60+FPS all day.

All games mentioned running on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit.

The Phenom is showing its age, but as a gaming rig I think I can squeeze a few more years out of it, and as an everyday internet browsing/office applications I bet I could get another 10 years out of it, especially running Linux.

Significant Upgrade!

I bought this to replace an AMD Phenom X3 8750. Still using an AM2+ platform motherboard, this Phenom II X4 940BE is noticably faster! Runs games smoother, opens programs quicker, and is running at 3.5GHz overclocking from the stock 3.0GHz stably simply by increasing the multiplier. I didn't have to do any voltage changes or any other BIOS modifications for it to run w/o errors.

Now, compared to the most recent AM3 quad core Phenom II's, or any new Intel quad core, this chip does not run as fast. But, for my budget minded performance enthusiasm, it is just fine, thank you.

Quality, Speed and Reliability!

It was time to upgrade a dual core system I built last year. It already had 16Gb of DDR2 and a Asus HD7770 graphics card w/2Gb DDR5. The only thing left to do was was add a faster processor with a few more cores and breath more life into the old girl. The processor was a great price and it came pretty fast. Popped it in and it's like a brand new animal!
I'm very happy with its performance and I'm sure it's more then adiquick to hold my collage age daughter.

940 vs M2N32-SLI

Afew peculiarities with this combination. The 940 replaced a 6000+ on one of the Photoshop machines. With the 5502 BIOS update in place the chip was installed and the machine rebooted. No problems, except that only two cores show. Msconfig only shows two cores available. Others have stated that a clean reinstall of Windows XP is required to recognize the four cores. I can confirm this. Remember to flash the BIOS BEFORE installing the 940, and reset the BIOS before the 1st power up.

No overclocking so far but the best that can be obtained with air cooling is a lousy 10% anyway. Prime95 runs the temps up to 70C max with the big Zalman cooler running full fan. Idle temps are 47-50C. This using ASUS Probe II. Acceptable. This might settle down a bit after the Arctic Silver reaches its stable configuration.

On my M2N32-SLI at least, all drives (IDE or SATA) except the boot drive (SATA) must be disconnected. If not, a 0x0000007B error results - BSOD. Your mileage might vary. This has ALWAYS been the case on this machine. It's written in white ink on the outside of the case in the event someone (me) forgets.

I now have four wonderful cores. Boot times are not improved much (I can still make coffee before the machine is finished booting), but apps run much quicker, especially the Photoshop stuff. The reinstall of CS4 was much improved over the 6000+.

Fastest AM2+ part availabe if your board is new enough

Did not work in a Abit AM2+ matxboard - Abit went byebye so not much help from website with a BIOS upgrade. Processor works fine in AM3 matx board. This AM2+ which has the more or less the same as the Phenom II X4 945 for AM3. But this processor is also the Black Edition with an unlocked multiplier for simple overclocking. Performs similar to Intel C2Q 9400 depending on which apps are tested. Google it for reviews.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

m2n-sli deluxe with a phenom II X4 940 quad core processor HDZ940XCJ4DGI

I have a m2n-sli deluxe motherboard and had a dual core 6000+ processor and upgraded to this with the 5001 bios. This processor is a monster. This new processor with a nvidia 8800gts 640mb graphics card on far cry 2 increased the framerate almost 20 fps. on crysis I can play it in directx 10 mode with everything on high in 1024x768 where before I can only play in directx9 on medium settings. On automatic settings on my motherboard it booted up fine. But when I stress tested it with prime95 it would fail within 5 minutes.
So I did a lot of research and found out my motherboard does not have the best voltage regulation. how I fixed the problem I set the processor voltage up to 1.425v stock is 1.36, northbridge ht voltage 1.3v, northbridge core voltage up a drop and my memory up to 1.85v. The stock heatsink the processor was getting to hot. I bought a coolermaster hyper tx3 with as5 compound and I was getting the same temps as my stock heatsink so I bought a second fan for a pushpull effect and it droped my temps 10 degrees. on stock heatsink I was getting 58 degrees and kept climing within 5 minutes with prime95 now I can run prime95 for hours and it gets to 53 degrees. I cant overclock this processor on my motherboard but overall it has been rock solid.
