The Story of Super Mario Bros 2

Will the real Super Mario Bros 2 please stand up? Super Mario Bros (SMB) purists will argue that this version of the SMB NES trilogy is not the actual SMB2. In Japan, SMB2 was released in 1986 as a sequel to SMB. Due to its similarity to its predecessor and the significant increased degree of difficulty, Nintendo of America decided not to release it in the United States. Instead, Nintendo of America re-branded the Japanese popular game Doki doki panic, with the Super Mario characters, and released it as SMB2. This explains why the enemies and power-ups we were all familiar with in SMB, did not appear in SMB2.

The "real" SMB2 was eventually released in North America as part of the collection available in the SNES game Super Mario All-Stars, and was renamed SMB: The Lost Levels.

While I consider SMB2 to be the inferior game out of the trilogy, it does provide a different type of gameplay from the other two games.

The quirky, American release of Super Mario Bros. 2 will entertain!

After the success of Super Mario Bros. A sequel was released in Japan that highly resembled the gameplay and look of the original. However, Nintendo quickly assumed that Mario's new adventure would be far to difficult for American gamers. Their solution was to add some Mario sprites into a game called 'Doki Doki Panic' and slap the Mario name onto it and call it Mario 2 in the United States. The real (japanese) Mario 2 is now known as the 'lost levels' in the united states and was later released on the snes with updated graphics as a part of the 'Mario All-Stars' compilation. In the meantime, American gamers plucked vegetables, carted keys, and utilized the abilities of the four different playable characters to defeat the dastardly frog, Wart. Though radically different from its predecessor, Many elements and enemies from Mario 2 such as the 'shy guy' became commonplace Mario elements and the game is actually quite tight and entertaining. One of the more meaty NES titles. Pick it up!Vollständige Rezension lesen...

A fantastic sequel!

Ok, so yes, I'm old enough to have been 11 years old when the NES came out. I was obsessed. I'll never forget playing the first Super Mario Bros. For those my age, you remember what that was like! Life changing. I was glued to that game until I mastered it. However, I started playing guitar a couple years later and got into rock and roll. Video games hit the wayside. I never played Super Mario Bros 2 back in the day. I was curious, so I just recently bought it. 30 years late, but never mind. It was weird at first. Different. Maybe too different. I watched some YouTube game play vids before I bought it thinking how weird it looked, and that I probably wouldn't like it, but I owed it to myself to take one for the team and but it anyway. So I got it. It arrives. The first 15 mins are awkward with it. Wait, I pick up characters and throw them? Ok, weird..... but fast forward a little bit and I was glued. I keep going back to that game every day. I was playing assassins creed the other day on my PS3, and I had to pause it because I wanted to get a 'quick' game of SMB2 in... I mean, it's like I'm 11 again. Now I'm sure anyone reading this has probably played it before, or is already planning on purchasing it. But if you're one of the few that was around back when this all went down, and somehow you missed that boat, and you're on the fence.. listen: Buy it. It's a fantastic game. You will love it. I haven't played SMB3 yet either, so I'll be getting that one too, after I solve this one, which may take awhile it looks like! lolVollständige Rezension lesen...

Super Mario Bros. 2 is just as fun today as it was way back when!

Even though this game is a little different than the other Mario games and is often looked at as the "black sheep" of the series, I think it's just as fun as many other games from the NES library. It has the same basic gameplay as the other Mario games, except you can now pick up objects and enemies to throw around. There are no Koopas or Goombas in the game, but you still get to face off against classic enemies such as Birdo and Wart. Good stuff!Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Fun Old Game to Play

The second game in the three game series, Super Mario Bros 2, is unlike the other three making it a fun, challenging game. This game, unlike the other two, allows you to pick bombs and things out of the ground and place them to blow up walls. It also allows you to pick up bad guys and throw them out of the way or at other bad guys. This is a great game if you just want to have some "old school" fun!Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Great product for the price, hours of play if you like sidescrollers

Although not really a part of the mario series until it came to the US it's still a very challenging and good game. Being able to play 4 different characters, each with a special talent is great. Although I always stick with princess for floating. It's only flaw is that the characters always seem to have slippery shoes. They slide more than would be expected and it's a real challenge in the Ice world.

Overall a really fun game and quite worth the money.

one of the best of the best.....ever!

i absolutely love the classics. recently i decided to become a collector and i bought a new (well, not new, but perfectly working) original NES and 10 games that came with it. one of the games was the first SMB. it didn't have 2 or 3 in the bundle, so i just bought those separately. you really just can't have an original NES without the complete mario trilogy. it's almost a sacrilege. mario is basically the reason that nintendo exists in the first place, so if you have the original NES, you MUST get all mario games so you can say you own a piece of history. mario 2 is also awesome because its the first time you can use other characters besides mario and luigi. the fact you can play as more than 1 or 2 characters in general, is remarkable, and unique amongst other games of its time. even though this version of this game is really just japan's DOKI DOKI PANIC with mario's name slapped all over it, it's still wonderful, and indirectly shows you that people who live in japan have first dibbs on all the cool games from nintendo -_-;

this game, and all other mario games, are instant classics :)

Mario Bros 2 is a Hit

If you are a fan of Mario, Luigi, Toad, and the Princess this game is for you. It differs much from the previous Super Mario Bros. This game has no flower/fire power, Bowser, or some of the things you previously found in Mario 1. It takes a while to get use to the control of it, but once you get use to it, it is great fun.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

Nice memories from childhood

The cartridge has a great label and it worked on the first attempt. It's nice to play this game I used to play decades ago. Great purchase.
