Research Before Building this Kit
This can be considered an "In Box Review" since I have not actually built the kit yet. The mould and plastic quality of the kit seems to be fairly good and the kit is quite inexpensive for the scale.
The detail on this kit is fairly sparse for the size and more comparable to a modern 1/1200 scale ship. It is a simple kit with relatively few parts and probably quite a good example for when it first came out over 50 years ago. Some of the details are quite crude as can be seen in the photograph of the sample model. Please look at the masts and the radar antenna o the foremast.
A little background: USS North Carolina was the lead ship of her class and the first of the new generation of "Fast Battleships". She was commissioned April 1941 and decommissioned shortly after WW2 in 1947. She was mothballed in the reserve fleet until 1961 at which point she was transfered to the state of North Carolina as a museium ship. Her total active service was 6 years and only military service was WW2.
Now for the gripes. First of all, this was a worthy kit for what I paied which was the list price which is much less than a modern kit of a similar size.
If one does a comparison between the painting in the box art and the photograph of the sample build, there are some obvious differences. Most notable are the circular versus rectangular antenna on the foremast and the configuration of both the foremast and main mast.
Both antenna types were mounted on the foremast at verious times in service, so one has to decide which configuration to build.
The paint scheme is another choice to be made. During wartime, the wooden decks were painted dark blue-gray and the bull sides carried a dazzle camouflage scheme. In peace time, the decks were natural wood colour and hull sides were plain gray and sometimes carried the ship's number with shadow at the bow.
The last detail is probably the most odd. Note that in the instructions, there is a helicopter at the stern. During wartime, BB55 would have had a OS2U Kingfisher as a scout plane in that position. Toward the final months of the war, the SC Seahawk was just starting to replace the Kingfisher on the newer ships. Helicopters did not really come into service until about the time North Carolina would have been decommissioned.
This is my understanding, but I am not an expert on this subject.Vollständige Rezension lesen
