A wealth of examples as a guide for the artist!

If I had this book at university with its passionate instruction, I'd have been years ahead in understanding the artistic process toward drawing the figure. Specifically, my gesture drawings would convey motion instead of being an ambiguous cloud. Acceptance of construction-lines as an artist's tool, instead of it being thought of as a cheat, would have eased the pain of so many grotesque, misshapen figures.

Of great value is the teacher showing the refined line work overlapping rough line work - yielding how artistry is messy and explorative until discovery hones in on a shape or form. Too many drawing instructionals showcase only polished finals without the initial fumbling steps - misleading early artists into an expectation that their first line is the final line.

The illustrations in this book offer so many good and delicious insights into drawing itself as well for understanding some approaches for drawing the figure. The writing is friendly too - having a feeling the author is engaging the reader first, then discussing the subject. Probably the best figure drawing book you will find.

I’ve tried Burne Hogarth, i’ve tried Bridgeman and Loomis, and while these books are good in their own right, i found the Hampton book by far the most accessible and useful. It’s a better book for beginners and shows you step by step how to build your skills from the basics. The other books tend to just show you a complex illustration by the artist and expect you to learn something by recreating this, or memorising this. Definitely one of the best books out there on the topic.

I have the 2013 edition. Starts with gesture drawing, followed by anatomy for artists, ending with shading, and draping your drawing with clothing. Easy to read. Highly recommended.
