W850I REVIEW

If you consider what your washing machine can do compared to the stainless steel washboard of the past, you can understand why the Sony Ericsson W850i is no longer a simple mobile phone – it’s simply advanced technology.

DESIGN

Bursting with testosterone, the W850i is a man’s mobile - end of story.
There is a ‘golden white’ model available (as shown in the picture above), which we are hoping is a bit more feminine, but this one wouldn’t be seen dead in a handbag. The slider design works nicely and sits comfortably in the hand, although apart from chatting; most applications require two hands.
It weighs 116 grams and measures a chunky 98 x 47 x 21 mm, which we can accept as it is a slide phone.
The back of the phone is nicely textured – similar to how a golf ball is, (but we wouldn’t recommend hitting it down the driving range) so it’s easier to hold. The entire camera’s design has a matt texture, without a girly shine or sparkle in sight.
We like the concept of taking photos by turning the W850i onto its side, so that the button sits at the top as if you were using a normal camera. Very smart! The robust, colourful screen is down to the 262-colour TFT screen plastered over the front of the W850i.
On the back of the camera is a walkman logo, an on the inside you’ll find a tiny camera for 3G video calling.

FEATURES

It’s not just the aesthetic features of this phone that have businessman written all over them – the spec list is geared up for the man on the move too. The fact that it’s a portable music player that can hold up to 1000 songs, and allows you to listen to FM radio, means it’s the perfect gadget for a commuter. Other cool integrated gadgets are a 2-megapixel camera with heaps of editing options and excellent business-type applications, like file manager and flight mode.
We really enjoyed using the conference call options with 3G video calling – who needs to go anywhere when they have this option? You can do all your business before you even brush your teeth in the morning (although we suggest brushing your hair before video calling).
You can check emails and do a spot of online banking in the palm of your hand with the high-speed internet options available on the W850i.
It has a great long list of connectivity options including Infrared, BlueTooth, 3G, Fast Port, GPRS, Synchronization PC, UMTS, USB Mass Storage, and USB support.
Once you’ve seen to all the serious stuff, you can kick back and play one of the 3D games on offer.
The W850i's internal memory is pretty average at just 16MB, but that’s not a problem, as it has a Memory Stick Pro Duo to back it up.
Last but not least, we should mention the choice of 40 polyphonic ring tones, and out of all 40, we would say at least 7 or 8 of them are suitable for the office.
The W850i supports the following networks GSM 900, 1800, 1900, and UMTS 2100.

PERFORMANCE

As long as you can accept that the W850i is a man’s mobile – you’ll absolutely love it.
We really liked the design and enjoyed using many of the applications. Downloading music was simple and fast once synchronised with a PC (after installing the disc included).
The control pad is comfortable to use, but does require two hands – which can get quite taxing after a while.
Once you get used to using two hands, the menus are easy to navigate, and options are clear and easy to understand.
We love the 3D games, which are dangerously addictive so beware.

Poor volune

Although a solid mobile the sound quality is so very low making it impossible to hear anywhere unless in an empty quiet room even then it's a struggle to hear.

Sony Ericsson W850i any good

Well is the Sony Ericsson W850i any good.First of all the phone is an older model, about two to three years old. Without going in to a huge data stream of facts and figures, the phone has all the usual extras that the latest phones are offering. In fact the phone industry seems to have come to a screaming halt when it comes to offering new capabilities other than design changes IE the I Phone type shape, now very common with touch screen technology. Personaly I do not like touch screen, you are forever wiping your fingure prints of the screen which tends to leave fine scratch marks.The W850i is quite a solid handful and very well made, it is a slide phone but quite a number of the phones system menues are available without sliding the phone to the open position. You can make phone calls access the menu system which opens up all the phones applications, including the bydirectional camera and also the music player. The music player is excellent via the supplied headset but does benifit from using higher quality headphones. You will need to buy a third party connector to go from Sony Ericsson to 3.5mm jack plug but it is worth it.Finaly all I can say is, just as Sony Ericsson get a phone right they change it,for what I think is not realy an improvement. If it aint broke don't mend it and the W850i certainly aint broke. I like it's looks it's usability and it's build quality.As I said this not a technical review, look the phone up on any search engine and read all the specs for yourself and make your mind up. I love this phone and I have had all the so called smart phones,the other advantage is, it can be picked up in good condition for peanuts.

Sony W850i Mobile Phone

I got one of these phones off of ebay. I paid about £25 plus postage. It included a 1gb memory card, and the mains charger. I had tried for about a week to get a phone like this or similar. I wanted something to listen to mp3's on (using flight mode). I have had walkman phones before, and wanted another one before you can get any memory stick duo or m2 expandable memory sony ericsson phones anymore.
It does what I got it for. The condition is quite good. I think I made a good decision in getting one.
My own view is that for a mobile phone for listening to mp3's (like rave or dance) you should consider something like this.
For a regular mp3 player for listening to rock, something like a philips clip (half plastic, half metal).
It's up to you, if you know how to get the mp3's right, if you don't, that is your problem.
For the latest phones, I like the idea of the sony ericsson with the cursor and the buttons for playing games.
I haven't really made my mind up about phones that do ten things, but with a cursor/buttons/and games it looks like fun.
I don't know about all of these computer like phones yet, they seem too complex, maybe I am just too simple.
I like walkman phones for some music, sat nav phones for sat nav, and mp3 players for other music.

Second such of these phones i have owned. Infact i bought the second after i broke the first (my fault not the phones). Love everything about it: Layout, the walkman (specifically the sound quality - as a musician and sound engineer, i can atest for its quality), the handy light (invaluable to me), the little music mate, quality of downloadable games & themes etc. (free when you look), love the camera - between my own and my girlfriends collection of phones, this one captured the first year of our daughters life the best. And the web access is superb (when you wish to pay those exorbitant prices!).
All in all; my favourite phone ever, and one i'll have for a long time before i'll find something as good, for that price.Vollständige Rezension lesen...

I love this phone

A slide-design Walkman phone, the W850i features Sony's award-winning Walkman music player with enough memory for around 1000 songs, a built-in FM radio, 3G video calling and a 2 megapixel camera. The W850i's camera is not as good as the W810i, but it has the benefits of being 3G and having a sexy slide design!

The Sony Ericsson W850i is a Walkman-branded phone in a slide design. Sony Ericsson are new to sliders, but they have produced a very nice design that slides nicely, has a nice keypad, a 5-way scroll key that's much easier to use than the joystick design of the K800i, and makes excellent use of the slide format to include a large screen. It's available in a choice of black or white. The white version has a real 24 carat gold Walkman logo for added bling! Sony Ericsson W850i

My Sister used a W800i prior to this, and was disappointed with the W850i's image quality due to the lack of auto focus. But then again, music is what she is after and in this department, the W850i absolutely performs exceedingly well. The sound is great, the Walkman 2.0 is excpetionally cool (especially with album art) and the functionalities of the phone are truly superb. Great phone

Great style phone with a good camera and a good mp3 player.
It's quiet simple to operate, the menus are intuitive.
With a memory stick card, we can put lots of music or take lots of photos or even use it as a pendrive. He could be better if he was Simbian operating system. In final it was a very goog cell phone.Vollständige Rezension lesen...
