The First ones is still better!
Need for Speed: Most Wanted isn’t just mediocre, it’s very mediocre. In fact, its highest selling point is probably the fact that it’s such a generic racing game. It’s perfect to just pick up and play especially if – like me – you have little interest in cars or in playing a realistic racing sim. But it’s all flash and no substance, like a wine that’s been watered down so it can appeal to many palates without offending any. Don’t mistake me; the scenery is beautiful and it’s a load of fun to just cruise around in Criterion’s open-world and take it all in. And all those cars look sooo sleek. But they’re all automatic, the open-world isn’t very large, and there are hardly any races. There are only five races for each car, and you have to discover each car as opposed to unlocking them somehow. This leaves little reason to keep playing and discovering. The only reason to keep playing after the first couple hours is the multiplayer. But really, who doesn’t love talking trash to your friends after running them into the side of a building? One of the unique features of the game – cop chases – are more of a frustrsting time-waster than anything. It’s honestly just easier to pull over since there isn’t any sort of penalty for it. That, combined with barely any unlockables and a real lack of depth in customization, makes it hard to call this title anything more than just “okay.” If you’re looking to just pick up a controller and race around without wasting your time, then this is perfect. But if you’re looking for anything more than a simple arcade racer then you’re going to be disappointed. 2.5/5 stars.

Okay game!!
If you know anything at all about Crytek’s famous FPS series then you’ll find few surprises in the third installment of the Crysis series. To say that the graphics are breathtaking is a monumental understatement. There were countless times where I stopped just to take in all the visual splendor the television screen was assaulting me with. Set in 2047, Crysis 3’s version of a dilapidated New York City made me think of Mayan ruins with the streets and buildings reclaimed by nature. After the awe-inducing setting became familiar and I actually had to get down to the business of saving the world or whatever cookie-cutter story was being thrown at me, the game started to lose a little of its appeal. As a newcomer to the series, I feel that the story is rather generic and the characters are fairly forgettable. Don’t mistake me: the voice-acting is great, the dialogue isn’t too cheesy, and the facial animation leaves little to be desired. But the entire time I was playing the campaign it felt like I was in a Michael Bay movie. For better or worse, it was just over-the-top sometimes. The designers take advantage of every opportunity they can to show off, either through constant explosions or the ever-present water that always seemed to be running down my HUD. I get it, I’m wearing a visor and you wanna show off how well you rendered water effects. Thanks. Fortunately, the campaign rapidly improves once you get past the first mission and you’ve become more comfortable with the nanosuit. But where the game really shines – outside of the graphics department – is in the gameplay. This is especially apparent once you start to play multi-player. The ability to customize your weapon on-the-fly without having to pause the action is fantastic once you get the hang of it. The abilities of the nanosuit that you wear are way more impressive than Master Chief’s Spartan armor. The ability to power jump, slide, cloak, vault, and basically parkour around during a firefight with other players who have the same capabilities is just plain fun! Crysis 3 may never usurp the multiplayer throne from the bigger guns, but there is enough depth and pleasure to be had here where it’d be easy to lose track of time. No review of Crysis 3 is complete without discussing the Predator Bow… and how flippin’ sweet it is! Yes, it’s over-powered. Yes, it makes all the other already boring guns even more uninteresting. But who cares?! If you were a fan of Turok’s bow on the N64 or you enjoy playing the Sniper class on Team Fortress 2, then you’ll have way too much fun with this weapon. It appears that bows are becoming popular in entertainment, and that extends to games: Hawkeye in the Avengers movie, the new television series starring Green Arrow of all people, and all the artwork for the new Tomb Raider that depicts a roughed-up Lara Croft with bow in hand. Instead of just falling into a trend, the bow is actually as cool as you would think, and even cooler on multiplayer when everyone can run around all cloaked and agile like a Predator from the movies. Overall, Crysis 3 is a fantastic game. It’s only when we start to dissect some of the particulars that we run into its shortcomings. And even those would probably not be half as disappointing if not for all the hype that was brewing around this game’s release. 4/5 Stars.
