One of Disney's finest films!
"The Watcher in the Woods" is, in my opinion, the best film ever to be produced by The Walt Disney Company. The film often gets panned by critics and reviewers and has never gotten the treatment that many other Disney films have. It goes largely overlooked by many, even by those at Disney. This particular release of the film was produced by Anchor Bay in 2001. This DVD of the film contains more features than the DVD released by Disney three years later. The Anchor Bay release comes with: A 20-page booklet featuring interviews with the cast and crew; a miniature reproduction of an original theatrical poster; several theatrical and television commercials; alternate endings; and audio commentary by director John Hough. This film was made in 1980, a time when movie-goers were more apt to go to films that were more adult than the typical Disney fare, in particular horror, sci-fi and slasher films. Disney wanted to make a movie that would compete with these film genres and regain their standing at the box office. So, the powers-that-be at Disney set out to make their first horror film with "Watcher", though many now categorize it as suspense. This movie however didn't prove a huge success for the Disney Co. and was pulled from theaters in 1980, re-shot re-edited and re-released a year-and-a-half later but it was still unsuccessful. Yet, there is something about this movie that draws the viewer in. The version available on Anchor Bay [even with the alternate scenes] is the final version. The initial version of the film, which has never been released in its entirety since its 1980 New York premiere, featured an alien as "The Watcher", a creature which makes its first appearance to the public since 1980. However, after extensive re-writes [more than 150] "The Watcher" takes on more of a spiritual, ghostly and atmospheric feel rather than that of an alien creature. This final version pulls the first part of the film together weaving elements that were odd clues to the characters into a final scene that resolves a thirty-year old mystery. The film may be too scary for small children [as it contains elements of witchcraft, seances, and possessions] but to its many fans it is perfect. If you have not seen this film I recommend that you do and this is the DVD version to watch. Also, if you are a fan of the film and do not have the Anchor Bay DVD release of "Watcher" you must purchase it. "Watcher" not only has a great story but it also has fine acting performances from screen-legends Bette Davis, Carrol Baker, David McCallum and Ian Bannen. This is one of the best.

One of Walt Disney's finest films!
This film is often looked over in the Disney canon, though it should not be. It is, in my opinion, a true masterpiece of cinema. The film boasts a star-studded cast including Brian Keith, Vera Miles, Brandon DeWilde, Walter Brennan, Ed Wynn, Linda Evans and Tom Skerritt. The scenery is amazing thanks to on-location filming in New England. It is a moving film about a family living in the wilderness who struggle with change, among other things. They try to get by in a changing landscape by selling furs while at the same time trying to establish a sanctuary for migrating Canadian geese. This movie is a cinematic treasure and should be in anyone's film library. This is the only time it has been available on DVD [and either the second or only time it's been available to own on home video]. And with it being released on DVD in 2004 this is becoming harder and harder to find. Buy it and hopefully you too will see the greatness in this film that I do. "Those Calloways" are not to be missed!

Two Great Dolly Albums On One CD!
This two-fer CD contains two of Dolly Parton's best albums and was released in 2007 to coincide with her European tour. The first on this disc is her 1983 release "Burlap & Satin." Despite being one of her more underappreciated titles it is one of her best. It contains songs that span several genres. "Jealous Heart" and "One Of Those Days" are very country-tinged tracks while "A Cowboy's Ways" and "A Gamble Either Way" [which were both intended to be used in the film "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" but were cut from the final edit] represent more of a showtune feel. Then there is "Potential New Boyfriend" which is very pop oriented and in fact was released as a dance mix. The album ends with a spiritual song, "Calm On The Water", with Dolly singing about Jesus while being backed by a choir. Also included is a duet with Willie Nelson on "I Really Don't Want To Know", an Eddy Arnold cover, and "Send Me The Pillow You Dream On", a Hank Locklin cover. All in all, this is a very diverse album. In stark contrast to this is the disc's second title, 1985's "Real Love." This is often seen as Parton's most full-blown pop album. By this point in her career she was focusing on her pop music success rather than country. However, this album and its singles were hits on country radio rather than pop stations. For instance, her duet with Kenny Rogers "Real Love" was a #1 country single but only went to #91 on the pop charts. One of the albums standouts is "Tie Our Love (In A Double Knot)" which suits Dolly's voice to a tee. This album, despite having strong sales, hit singles, a major tour and HBO special with Kenny Rogers to promote it, was not a huge success and RCA executives decided not to renew her contract and this was her final new release with the studio she had been with since 1967. However, despite their actions this album is great and has very engaging songs on it that do not disappoint any listener. Therefore, this release is not only a must for any Dolly fan but it belongs in any music lover's library. This release was, afterall, chosen by RCA/BMG Germany to represent highlights in Parton's recording history. This is third in a three disc release that, along with two other two-fer CD's including the albums "All I Can Do"/"New Harvest...First Gathering" and "Great Balls of Fire"/"Dolly Dolly Dolly", respectively, incapsulate not only a very profitable and productive time in Dolly Parton's career but also a very diverse and creative time as well. These albums represent Dolly at a point in her career when she was at an apex and anything she touched seemed to turn to gold. Here we see albums that show her talent as a singer, songwriter, producer, entertainer, and star. After listening to these albums there should be no doubt as to why she has cemented her place in our culture as an icon. In short, it would be a very wise decision to purchase this compilation CD; you will not be disappointed.
