James Bond Autogyro Model Kit Airfix Toy 1:24 Scale You Only Live Twice NEW BOX
22. Aug 2017
“A Rare Gem for Hobbyists from the Early James Bond Movies”
For model collectors and hobbyists, the James Bond autogyro rare model plastic kit of "Little Nellie" from the movie “You Only Live Twice” is a gem. It was first issued by Airfix in 1967 and much later re-boxed by the same company in a second issue in 1996. Both releases were produced from the same molds. My eBAY purchase was the 1996 version which I was fortunate to get for a low price compared with other sellers elsewhere. I would, however, not rate the modeling skill as “2” as listed on the kit box. As many hobbyists who have built early Airfix products are aware, the instructions and sprue numbering leave much to be desired! The fact that the parts on the sprues are not numbered, and that there are no plan views of the sprues with part numbers in the instructions make an easy build coordinating the parts with the plans very difficult. In addition, the assembly diagrams sometime obscure the location of small parts, particularly in placing them behind other, larger parts. Because of the “erector set” nature of the small parts, wheel struts, and weapons assemblies surrounding the airframe, and the autogyro tower behind the pilot, painting of the model is a nightmare! Most of the parts have to be painted before assembly. Even at 1:24 scale these parts are small and fragile. In researching the aircraft, I found it very useful to make frame grabs from a DVD of the movie, especially at the beginning of its assembly on site and during “Q’s” explanation of its various features to James Bond (for readers with the DVD, the section for viewing "Little Nellie" assembly starts at ca. 49 min into the film). With careful planning of the model assembly and painting, however, the net result can be a valuable addition to a hobbyist’s collection of rare models. I gave this review 5 stars because of the rarity of the kit and the low price that I paid. (Airfix, by the way, no longer suffers from the inclusion of poorly prepared instructions. Their much more detailed plans of today’s kits are in fact a model of the way kit companies should produce instructions!).

Revell Assault Glider Waco CG-4A 1:72 Scale 2 available

A Rare Vintage Waco CG-4A Model Kit
This was a purchase of a vintage Waco CG-4A model kit, originally produced by Italeri (when it was spelled "Italaerei") in 1975, according to Scalemates. This particular kit was later licensed and reboxed in 1976 by Revell, so it also bears the Revell name (kit H-2012). It was also licensed and reboxed by Testors in the mid-80s. All parts, original and reboxed, were produced from the same molds. It is a rare kit, generally only found on eBay or vintage model dealers (when the buyer is lucky enough to find one, as was my case). The box still was in the original shrink wrap. I have no plans to resell the kit, so I opened it. I found all the sprues completely intact with the exception of one half of the fuselage which had become detached, but was otherwise undamaged. This is quite remarkable given the decades of storage, and given the myriads of very small parts. The "buy now" price asked was quite reasonable, one of the lowest I have seen for recent sales of the same kit elsewhere. In this scale of 1/72 there are no modern Waco CG-4A glider kits produced by any manufacturer. And in this scale, it goes superbly with the 1/72 scale C-47s available if one is interested in building a diorama related to D-Day or Operation Market Garden. As to the kit design itself, I should note that the cockpit is completely inaccurate. The glider did not have joysticks, but rather steering wheels attached to overhead girders. The experienced modeler with one of these kits will want to scratch build a new cockpit based on photographs of the cumbersome tubular design available on the Internet. The interior parts of the fuselage behind the cockpit, however, are excellently designed. The reason for such an effort is because the large canopy totally reveals the interior.
WW1 Airfield Display Base for Model Aircraft (1/32 True Details 32001)

Vintage Display Base originally made by out-of-business Squadron
A vintage resin kit for making a WWI aircraft display base. This is a 1/32 scale kit, i.e., for 1/32 scale WWI aircraft model kits such as those previously sold by Wingnut Wings. Unfortunately, both companies have gone out of business. Squadron (in Texas) makers of this WWI display base is on the auction block. Thus, specific kits they make (such as this one by True Details) will rapidly become a rarity as dealers' stocks disappear. So grab them while you can. I got this one from eBAY at the price Squadron regularly sold it.
