Alexander DVD
Sumptuously filmed, excellent location work, fine battle scene direction and all the usual trappings of today's genre of epic period pieces in the deserts of the Middle East. All spoiled by a predictable story line (I Claudius has been there and done it) and some dire acting. I quite like Colin Farrell but he was truly awful in this. Angelina Jolie was actually the best actor - says it all! And it was far too long (OK, I know it's an epic but the only thing of epic proportions I can recall was my boredom). Had the amazing effect of making Kingdom of Heaven seem really good by comparison. Stick to Gladiator, Ben Hur, Sparticus and Troy.

Sideways DVD
An off beat and at times tragic comedy sustained by strong characterisation and some sharp direction. Had a tendency to sag a bit at times and this will not satisfy those looking for all out action and thrills. However, it was a nice story with a happy ending and we can all do with a nit of that from time to time. The deleted scenes extras contained one of the funniest passages of any film I can think of, pity the producers weren't brave enough to include it. Overall, some especially funny scenes but probably not enough of them.

Goal! The Dream Begins DVD
Hmm, well, I'm a Newcastle Utd fan and so I enjoyed it, especially the scene in a bar in Los Angeles which had Brian Johnson from AC/DC in a bit part. But apparently this is the first of a trilogy (Part II the fall from grace, part III he plays for Argentina in the World Cup) and I cannot see me buying those DVDs when they come out. Given the popularity of the sport world-wide Danny Cannon (love CSI!) & Co. make a cogent point that no-one has ever put up a proper budget to fund a decent film on football. This is a decent effort but you still get the Forrest Gump-esque running of rings around ten of the opposition by our hero before scoring (several times) and the fact is that (unsurprisingly) he is patently no Maradona and therefore these scenes simply lack credibility and serve ultimately to relegate the film to the Second Division. Better to watch the real thing, I think, preferably at St James's Park in my case. Nice try though.
