conquest of everest.
For newcomers to mountaineering history this is an interesting account of the first ascent- however most of it has been previously well documented. I would have liked to see a short summary of the leading players in the team - in their own way were as equally important as the successful two. In addition the testing of oxygen equipment and trainng in the mountains in Snowdonia would have helped to complete the picture.

Second time around.
This is my second Fuji Fine-Pix S5000 series camera. This is a lot of camera for the money. I especially like the B&W facility and the Chrome offering for intensifying the picture. There is nothing complicated about the set-up and for anyone wanting to break into the digital market you could not do better. The lightness of the camera is a massive plus.Perhaps the only draw-back is the lack of wide angle, although I managed to get a 28mm screw on at a snip! Happy snapping - Ken Smith.

A thoroughly enjoyable and compelling read.
Regions of the Heart is a well written, in depth, account of one of the most talented British woman mountaineers of her generation. It pulls no punches in its pursuit of Alison's troubled private life and perhaps hits back of her detractors, mainly from the media, after her death on K2 - let's face it serious mountaineering, by its very nature, is a self-centred obsessive sport and it is usually the wives and kids left at home. Alison reversed this trend and, in consequence, left herself open to unfair criticism. On a more personal note, I would have liked to see more of her British rock climbs, especially in Wales, mentioned, many of which she soled. It is now 15 years since she was killed and her family have remained together living near Ben Nevis still enjoying their mother's legacy of the outdoor life. 'Regions of the Heart' stands alongside Maria Coffey's, excellent 'Fragile Edge' in showing the often tragic and human face of mountaineering.
