Getting Long in the Tooth
I bought the Garmin GPSMAP 60C about 3 years ago and can’t imagine traveling without it now. Its features include: Sunlight-readable display with 256-color transreflective TFT display (1.5" W x 2.2" H; 2.6" diagonally); color operating system with new look-and-feel Faster processor, with auto routing, turn-by-turn directions, and audio alerts along city streets or trails when using MapSource® City Select® or 24K Topo software (optional software) 56 MB of internal memory for storing map detail Permanent user data storage Each day’s best hunting and fishing times—along with sunrise/sunset times—on the integrated Outdoor Calendar Special geocaching navigation mode Geolocation games, such as Virtual Maze, Nibbons, Geko™ Smak, and Memory Race Fast map transfer, with support for both USB and serial port interfaces; navigation instructions can be shared with repeaters, plotters, and autopilots using NMEA protocols through the dedicated serial port Detailed basemap with general map data, including highways, major roads, river, lakes, and borders Dedicated "mark", "page", "enter", "quit", "menu", "find", and "zoom out/in" buttons; four-position rocker pad 2.4" x 6.1" x 1.3" (W x H x D) unit dimensions Weighs 5.4 ounces (without batteries), 7.5 ounces (with batteries) WAASGPS receiver with accuracy to 10 feet in North America; built-in quad-helix antenna for better satellite reception 30 hours of battery life under typical-use conditions (uses two "AA" batteries) Multi-platform navigation for easy navigation in a car or boat, or on foot Accepts data from MapSource products (City Select for driving, U.S. Topo and 24K Topo for hiking, Recreation Lakes for freshwater, and BlueChart® for saltwater applications) Waterproof to IEC 60529 IPX7 standards (can be submerged in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes) 50 reversible routes, 10,000 track points with tracBack® technology (navigate to any track point on the displayed map), and 1000 waypoints with additional graphical icons for location identification Proximity alerts for anchor drag, arrival, off-course, proximity waypoint; built-in alarm clock User-configurable track-line color, waypoint projection, display color scheme, large-numbers option, audio tones, and pages (turn on/off main pages or change the sequence in which they appear) trip computer provides odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed, and more My own observations: You “have” to get the optional Mapsource mapping software to use all the great features of the unit. The GPSMAP 60C technology has been supplanted by newer GPS chipset (SiRF) that has great sensitivity. These newer models (i.e., Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx) are much better at getting a satellite fix under tree canopy’s and in urban settings with many tall buildings. Don't pay full price for this older GPSMAP 60C unit. The screen is great in direct sunlight or at night when backlit. If you are in shade it is more difficult to see. The unit is very rugged and can take a beating. I use it with the automotive mount and like it for travel. It does not have “voice directions” like some specific auto models, but is a general use type of unit. It has about 56 megs of internal storage. In my case it holds about 1/3 of California’s Mapsource map info – all the roads, Points of Interest with address, phone info and so. Great convenience tocall onthe road

I Think I'm in Love!
It must have been the full moon! I was trying to vacuum our carpet but was seeing that pet hair was not coming up. I checked our old Hoover Windtunnel and found the rotating brush was not moving. Not a surprise since it has been temperamental lately. In checking the brush I found that the plastic bar rotates on bearings of felt - that's right felt! The felt had worn away and the bar now was straining against the plastic and would not turn. So, a new vacuum was in order. We have several pets and pet hair was a prime consideration. We went through the reviews and quickly noted that Dyson was positively reviewed in most places. But really, - $500 for a vacuum? We were heading toward another Hoover or Bissell but stopped short. Reviews of those units talked about noise, weight, messy bagless clean-up. If you hate a product going out the door - maybe we should be looking elsewhere? So we took the plunge and bought a Dyson DC25 "All Floors". In reading the reviews it sounded like "The Animal" was what we needed for the pet hair. But Dyson, like many manufacturers, uses model numbers in a bewildering mix of letters/numbers. It turns out there are 3 DC25 models - The Animal, All Floors, and a Blueprint - Special Edition. They appear to have the same base machine - just different colors and attachments. We found the only difference between the All Floors and The Animal was an attachment for The Animal that was used to clean stairs and furniture. The Mini Turbine Head fit at the end of the hose. This, the purple color and $50 seem to be the only difference. The Blueprint-Special Edition has a flatter head configuration to better get under things. It is about $30 more than the All Floors. What we found was that we didn't need the Mini Turbine Head - the All Floors easily picked up hair with the include tools. If you find you want it - it can be purchased separately. We saw many on eBay. So we got the unit home and unpacked it. Its various parts snapped together. The unit is all plastic, but strong plastic. The click-together was solid and reassuring. When turned on the unit is very quiet (compared to our old Hoover) and pretty light. The pet hair was sucked-up in one pass - amazing. It was actually kind of fun using this machine; I never thought I'd say that about a vacuum cleaner! It just works so well. So, what the down-side? Well, the electrical cord is slightly shorter than our old Hoover and need to be moved more. The hose attachment is a built-in part of the machine that extends to clean stairs, furniture, and dust ceilings and so on. It too, is slightly shorter than the Hoover (although the Hoover hose was a separate attachment not stored within the unit itself like the Dyson). I could clean all the stairs with the Hoover hose without moving the unit - the Dyson will reach almost all the way but need to be repositioned to get all the stairs. The Dyson does not have a light - I came to rely on the Hoover headlight to see into dark corners. Bagless Unit - Many people noted other manufacturers had awkward bagless set-ups. They were hard to get to, hard to remove, hard to empty and easy to spill dirt all over the place. Not the Dyson - the the clear canister is up front where you can see when it's full, has an easy click button to remove it and take it to the trash can. A simple button releases the bottom of the canister and the dirt falls out. Clean, simple and effective. We feel that our $$ has been well spent!

Have Older Analog Tapes?
Sony Handycam DCR TRV740 Features • Records on Hi-8 Tape, not Mini DV-Tape • Records in Digital format – (Digital8) • A 120 minute Hi-8 tape will record 60 minutes of digital video. The higher requirements of digital video are laid down on the Hi-8 tape at twice the speed of analog video. • The TRV-740 produces great looking digital video. • It is backward compatible with older analog 8mm video. You can copy your older analog tape to computer for editing. Can then output the resulting edited video back to the TRV-740 in the digital format. • Has “Pass Thru” capability. You can hook up other video sources, VCR’s, TV’s or other cameras, to pass their video signal through the TRV-740 to a computer for editing. The analog signal is converted to digital as it is passed through to the computer. • The TRV-740 can take digital still photos. These pictures are stored on a Memory Stick. The pictures are good, not great. If you are looking for great digital stills – get a (now) inexpensive digital camera. Consider the still capability as a small perk for occasional casual shots. I know I have printed up OK 4x6 inch photos taken with my TRV-740. The shots from my Canon Powershot G6 are fabulous up to about 11x14 inches. • Still photos are downloaded via the USB cable. • Video is downloaded via the IEEE 1394/Firewire to your computer. • The TRV-740 has the “NightShot” AND “Super NightShot” modes. NightShot can record clear video in low light – the video is in that green tinged CNN-looking video – kind of cool. The Super NightShot can record in no light situations by illuminating with a built in infrared light. The resulting video is very choppy and cannot show much motion – acts as a very slow speed camera. This mode sounds interesting, but is practically unusable. • The digital video tape is inserted at the bottom of the unit. You cannot change tapes while the camera is on a tripod – got to take it off. Kind of a hassle. • Comes with a remote. Some features are only accessible via the remote – so don’t lose it! • The included battery (NP-FM50) lasts about a n hour of use (mileage may vary a lot depending on features used). There are other third party batteries available that last much longer. Be sure to have a second battery. I have had my TRV-740 for about two years and really enjoy it. It has been on several backpacking trips and is sufficiently rugged for normal outdoor activities. The plastic case is a little beat up but the innards are still producing great video. Some reviewers say the camera is a little large, but I prefer this style of camcorder compared to those tiny video cameras that are so small they are hard to hold steady and finding button – forget it! The downside is the D8 digital format. It would seem that this is a format that is going away. However, the tape will be available for many years and you can’t beat this if you have a collection of older analog 8mm video tapes. These tapes are playable on the TRV-740. I am in the process of converting my 20 years of old tape to DVD using the TRV-740 connected to my computer. Works great. If I didn’t have a bunch of old video tapes I would look at the Mini DV format – the most popular format. Stay clear of the DVD writing camcorder if you plan to edit your video. If you have the older analog 8mm tapes - look at this unit for great compatibility.
