Bananas - Woody Allen humour down South America way !!
Bananas is the story of Fielding Mellish a product tester played by Woody Allen who through loves trials and tribulations finds himself at the centre of a rebel revolution in the tiny republic of San Marcos. The humour comes at you from every angle and is largely visual and physical but Woody also liberally delivers the witty one liners that are his trademark. There are so many funny moments but his encounter with two thugs on the tube (one being a very young Sylvester Stallone) and the court room scene are particularly good as is the one of his browsing the magazine stall. The humour is so good because of the zany imagination and also Woody's acting skills which enable him to deliver just the right facial expression for just about everything. I would have given this 4.5 stars just to preserve my personal preference for SLEEPER another of his films from about the same creative period in Woody's film career.

SLEEPER - Magical comedy from Woody Allen
Just finished watching SLEEPER one of Woody Allen's early films from the 70'S and felt compelled to write a review about it. I won't go too much into the storyline except to say that he plays a character Miles Monroe part owner of The Happy Carrot health food restaurant and Clarinet player with the Ragtime Rascals who is awakened into a futuristic world 200 years after being involuntarily cryogenically frozen. This film is a joy to watch with Woody Allen's unique (I feel) ability to provide magical visual humour especially of his own physicality and combine this with the witty one liners he is famous for. I particularly enjoyed the scenes where he is a robotic manservant (not giving away the storyline as that is pictured on the case) where his every movement and expression is a joy. It is so zany, imaginative and funny from beginning to end that I would encourage everyone with a sense of humour to watch it even if his later movies have not appealed to them.

Beguiling, glorious AMELIE... dont deny yourself
The case says "Quite simply it's perfect" and I am inclined to agree. This beautiful film is cinematically a pleasure to the eyes and the heart. Amelie Poulain has led a sheltered life and finds herself when she quite accidentally discovers the joy of bringing pleasure and happiness into other peoples lives and eventually also to her own. There is so much to enjoy in this film from the acting, the music, the imagination, the heart warming storyline and the cute Amelie played by Audrey Tautou but also the other actors and actresses that quite have you forgetting that this is an artistic creation. It is a French language film with English subtitles but so worth watching. I so enjoyed it the first time that I wanted my children to watch it but on a second viewing realised that enchanting as it is there is enough adult orientated material to justify its 15 certificate. Buy it, borrow it but don't miss out on seeing this film. I was attracted by the cover picture of Amelie long before I ever got round to buying it.
