"Worth a look" bio of the band's singer
The Runaways was a mid- to late-70s American rock band consisting solely of mid-teen girls. While never really that successful in the States, the band was actually huge in Japan. Contrary to the movie's title, though, the film is more about the band's singer, Cherie Currie, & her relationship/friendship with bandmate Joan Jett, than the band itself. Which is a shame because while their story is interesting, their 3 bandmates are mainly relegated to the background rather than actively included in this film titled after the band. While their drummer, unfortunately, died a few years ago, the remaining bandmates would find fame in their own right. Lead guitarist Lita Ford would go on to a succcesful solo career, while their earliest bassist (Micki Steele) would find success with fellow girl group The Bangles in the mid-80s. The bass slot would prove a revolving door, & the experience was, apparently, sufficiently bad enough for the bass player who experienced the band's greatest success to threatened to sue if her name was used in the movie. Thus the bass player in the movie is actually a fictional character! The greatest indication that the film was made expressly to highlight Cherie & Joan comes at the end of the film when its revealed what became to the 2 of them while not a word is mentioned of the remaining bandmates. Overall, the film is a good story of 2 girls who sought the fame of rock & roll, yet only one would continue after it to this day. Definitely worth checking out, although a truer account of _the band's_ story is to be found in the documentary "Edgeplay - A Film About The Runaways". In that film, all the ex-Runaways, minus Joan, took part.

Excellent 6-part reality series!
In 2003 actress Gina Gershon starred in and (more importantly) helped produce, an independent film titled "Prey for Rock & Roll", about the real life musical adventures of a female indie punk/rock musician who never 'made it'. Rather than do the usual post-filmshoot publicity junket of strictly interviews for the film, Gershon hit the road with a backup group (the indie band Girls Against Boys) to perform live music shows on a 6 city mini-tour. The goings on were filmed by a crew from the IFC channel & presented here in this 2-disc DVD set. As a stand alone series, the show is an excellent account of the tour. It definitely answers critics of Gina Gershon who figured she was simply another actor who portrayed a musician on film but couldn't sing or play to save her life. One the contrary, she is quite talented in the music department, and proves to be a real pro with much wit & charm as she plows through one show in spite of illness, and another where the show is subject to a bomb threat. Living the indie musician role, she & her band overcome malfuncioning equipment as well as traveling in a van. The only time her front breaks down is when she realizes the film's distributor failed to make sure the film got an adequate push in theaters nationwide while she's trucked around from city to city promoting it in interviews and through the shows. This reviewer definitely recommends this series although I would advise you to shell out a few bucks & track down "Prey for Rock & Roll". Its a good indie film in its own right, and given everything Gina goes through to promote it it would help the viewer to see just what she's fighting for. Plus a few songs from the film's soundtrack are featured in the series' performances, not to mention 2 of her "Prey..." co-stars. The only critique I have of the series is that 6 episodes is just not enough! Too bad there weren't more episodes because the series draws you in and leaves you wanting more by the time the credits of the last episode.

Fair flick but could've been better
Right up I love Gina Gershon & was intrigued by the trailer I'd seen elsewhere. I bought a copy of the film & expected to be blown away by something stylishly cool. Although I liked the actresses' portrayals of band mates eternally one step away from the big time, the story let them down somewhat. At times the film had a low-budget feel to it, & the underdevelopment of one character lessens the impact of that character's tragic end. The attempt to develop a relationship between one of the bandmates & her bandmate's brother seems forced & didn't add much to the movie beyond giving the ladies a heavy who could back them up at a key point in the film. This could've been done without trying to develop a relationship between him & one of the ladies. Still, overall, the film is worth a look.
