Fantastic Projector - Optoma HD70 DLP
I decided to buy this so that I didn't have to keep borrowing a friend's projector to have movie nights. I have to say that for the money this is fantastic. I got this for about £410 including shipping and vat and along with a cheap projector screen, I'm getting a 74" widescreen image with it 2.5 metres or so away from the wall. You may want to calculate distances using the optoma calculator from their website, it is a bit fiddly placing it correctly in the room I have, but once it is set up it is great. The ceiling mount would probably be a lot more useful but I don't have one. Image quality is superb - colours don't look washed out, very vibrant. With the curtains drawn it is very very easy to watch a film. It is even viewable during the day, although not really that great at all. Suddenly at night, the whole picture becomes 10x better. HD Content at 1280x720 is just superb running through a laptop at 1280x720 using the vga cable. If you increase the sharpness, it looks spot on. Our 37" LCD at home is obviously better quality overall but for the price, I would go for the projector anyday It is very quiet for a projector. I have one issue with the focus ring, it is difficult to adjust perfectly, takes a bit of time to work out. The lens cap is really crap but who cares, once it is on, it does end up staying on - u just have to spend a while trying to get it on. Even SD stuff looks good. Don't know what else to say. This has kinda been replaced by some newer models that have the same specs but more brightness - i think theyre the hd62 and hd720x but i may be wrong. It turns on really quickly. Bear in mind, the image projection is slightly higher that where the projector is sitting, which for me is a good thing. Does up to 2000-3000 hours I think - lamps are around 160 pounds - I've seen other projector lamps for almost double that price. Considering that is 160 pounds spent every 3-4 yrs if you're watching a movie a day, thats pretty amazing. I doubt people would use it every day. I use mine about once or twice a week, so it could theoretically last 7-9 years. By then, the lamps will probably be cheaper or even more likely cheaper to upgrade the projector anyway! I first considered building a projector at www.lumenlab.com I did all the research with the benefits primarily being really cheap HID lamps but then realised how difficult it can be and how enormous the projectors are. Also I would probably have broken it during the process of making it and the cost would have been the same if not more to make it. It comes with HDMI, VGA, S-video, Component and video composite connections as well as a connection for an electric projector screen. It supports all inputs up to 1080i which are then rescaled into the native 1280x720. I'm happy with my purchase.
