Hearing is Believing
This is perhaps one of Andrew Lloyd Webber's most under rated musicals. Listening to the CDs without reference to the Libretto enclosed with them is slightly confusing: the story unfolds over a period of 18 years which isn't always obvious from the lyrics. The story concerns many different types of love, and how it changes over the passage of time. The 17 year old Alex we first meet is confusing love with lust, and it's good to contrast this with the more worldly descriptions of love given by his elderly uncle. Love of fine things; lust; love of places; sharing a lover; lesbian love; devotion and adoration of staff; love and protection of your family; underage, unrequited love ... just some of the "Aspects" touched upon during the musical. Unlike some of Andrew Lloyd Webber's earlier musicals, the score of "Aspects" has a huge variety of melodies, tempos and different styles. There are the well known show tunes "Love Changes Everything", "First Man You Remember", and "Anything But Lonely",but my favourites are some of the more haunting and melancholic numbers. George singing "Other Pleasures" to his young daughter Jenny is very poignant (and foreboding) detailing how he would trade even the smallest pleasures in life for her: and the contrast when Alex partially reprises this during his last bedroom scene with Jenny is spine tingling. But the highlight of the show must be the "Falling" in Act 2 Scene 14, when Alex, Jenny, George and Rose all sing - sometimes separately, sometimes together - about their own experiences of love. It's a soaring, haunting melody that I first heard on cassette in 1989, and which I'm glad to have become reaquainted with more recently on this new master of the original soundtrack. "A memory of a happy moment, that's what this time will one day be". Eddie Clements, 16/05/2008
